Hows the nightlife?

Hopeful there were a large contingent of “officials” in and around the place–there were also a lot of “unofficial” people, but I think some of the unofficials were really offcials in disguise.

Too funny, crunch!!! :D

I’ll give you props and credit for this even though the beginning is notorious for such refutation. Lol, but with explicit experience, I think this does kind of change my mind and convince me to attend the school. I didn’t know that before the issue of the sexual defiants came in hand so I was kind of worried.

Alright. But should that still mean that I should try to get back on campus before 10:30 PM?

Hopeful, I am not sure about 10:30 being the “official” time to be back on campus, but I think it is closer to midnight. Keep in mind I can not vouch that midnight is the official time but that was what I was told by one of the officials guarding the place last night while my D and I had dinner.

I went to University at buffalo and Binghamton. Let me tell you Binghamton is MUCHHHH safer. If sex offenders are really going to keep you from attending the Universiy that is your decision. A. Binghamton University isn’t in Binghamton its in Vestal, B. I feel the campus is VERYYY safe, so if you feel that down town isnt safe don’t go down town!

Downtown has bars and such.

There is usually always some kind of frat party every weekend.

The only sketchy area is Main Street really, which is not downtown.

Alcohol is easy to come by. Frats, house parties, friends over 21, chalked/fake IDs. Bars like the Rat don’t give a **** about your ID, as long as it says you’re over 21. Police generally don’t raid frat parties unless it is extremely loud or people are drinking outside on the street.

A good amount of drinking is done on campus. Every Saturday morning I see 2 or so bottles of vodka/rum/etc empty in the recycling bins on my hall (~20 people). As long as you’re responsible and quiet, you will be fine.

Bing is not as safe as the suburbs (LI, Westchester, Rockland), I’ll give you that. I’ve seen fights on campus getting broken up on campus on Friday nights, drunk bums passed out on the sidewalk in Johnson City, etc. But as long as you stick with a group of people, you won’t have any trouble.

Edit: The campus is incredibly safe though. University police are always driving around, there are emergency phones scattered on campus and the phones are never more than 400 meters away. Campus is very safe.

Pot is also easy to come by, if you’re into that. Cops on campus LOVE nothing more than busting kids with pot, so be aware.

was the bar you are referring to the OP?

^^Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! It WAS the OP!!!

So nycollegbound10, I can’t help but wonder…how’d ya know???

I just graduated from Binghamton, and there are lots of nightlife options, depending on what you’re looking for. There are a lot of bars downtown, and State Street is basically the center of student nightlife. There are parties every weekend, usually more frat parties but there are regular house parties as well. Personally, I much prefer regular house parties, and I stopped going to the frat parties after my freshman year, but I guess that all depends on the type of crowd you prefer to socialize with.

As for Binghamton’s safety, I don’t think your daughter should be worried. As a freshman, 90% of her time is going to be spent on campus anyway, and the campus is absolutely safe. Some parts of downtown can be frightening at night for someone who lives on campus and does not go into town regularly, but as long as she uses common sense (don’t walk in strange places alone, carry pepper spray if it gives you peace of mind, etc) she will be perfectly fine. I know when I was a younger student I thought downtown Binghamton was a bit scary, but when I moved off campus as an upper classman I realized there’s not too much to be scared of at all.

Of course, there are always bad areas of any town, but like I said, common sense will take you a long way.

haha - my mom grew up in vestal and when we’ve been back to visit my grandparents and have driven past the campus she has sometimes mentioned a place where she and her friends used to hang out. when i saw your post i asked her and she said it must be the OP!
