How's this for a schedule?

So I've decided on:

MATH 150
CHEM 110
CLAS 210D1
PHYS 131

and then

MATH 151
CLAS 210D1
CHEM 120
PHYS 142

that doesn't seem too overwhelming now does it? (hopefully not)

Have you taken calculus 1 and 2 before? Because either you should take MATH 140 and 141, or skip ahead to MATH 222. MATH 150 and MATH 151 are calculus 1, 2 and 3 put into two semesters. They are not the standard 3 credit courses but 4 credit courses, with the same number of hours as regular classes.

It’s actually pretty intensive but students who have seen some calculus before will think they know the material already for two thirds of the semester, so they won’t pay attention in class or in the tutorials. But in reality the vast majority of them don’t know calculus well enough to do well in the midterm and absorb the new material once it gets to multivariate calculus, and they’ll realize how intensive and tough MATH 150 is only too late. Those who know single variable calculus adequately should really take MATH 222 instead, to avoid the unnecessary revision and start with multivariate calculus right away (unless you don’t have the prereqs).

Of course, you can still take 150 and 151, but make sure you don’t take it lightly, even if the material appears familiar.

Thanks, blobof! I was just reading through calculus one and two and it seemed that it was all to familiar; But your explanation of math 150 makes it clear that I should probably just stick with the 140/141 route. I plan to major in neuroscience/microbiology and so I guess calculus isn’t really a requirement anyway…(aside from fulfilling the two required math courses). Plus, being a prospective Oop applicant to mcgill med, I might as well try to get that GPA as high as possible…thank god for <7% acceptance rates… Though, just to make myself feel as if I am not totally slacking off, I’ll probably still unnecesarily stick with phys 131/142.

I would still talk with an advisor before making the final decision. MATH 150-151 is definitely and insidiously tougher than 140-141, but some still manage to do quite well. You’ll have two weeks at the beginning of the semester to add/drop classes, so you might want to sit in on both classes if possible to compare.

If you’re doing pretty much any science major, as far as I know, sooner or later you’ll have to take calculus 3 (MATH 222), so taking 150-151 instead of 140-141 then 222 allows to get that done earlier and leaves you room for another, perhaps more interesting class. But if you’re going for higher GPA or don’t need to do multivariate calculus, then 140-141 is the safer route.
