How is it calculated?

When a school says the valedictorian will be the senior student with the highest cumulative average, what does this mean?

Usually the gpa is all grades earned in classes from grades 9 through first semester senior year. My school only uses grades from classes from grades 10 through first semester senior year to calculate gpa for ranking purposes (val, sal, top 20 etc). They use weighted gpa too.

Sent from my SGH-T589 using CC

I am talking about high school cumulative average not grade point average (GPA)…

From what I can tell, Cumulative Average and GPA are usually the same… at least my GPA is calculated in the cumulative average fashion.

Oh my god, you guys aren’t getting it… I am not asking for the difference between GPA and cumulative average. I am asking how I can calculate my HS cumulative average…
Please try to answer the other questions as well.

Unweighted:

A - 4.0

B - 3.0

C - 2.0

D - 1.0

F - 0.0

Weighted (Honors/AP) :

A - 4.5/5.0

B - 3.5/4.0

C - 2.5/3.0

D - 1.0

F - 0.0

This might vary from school to school. You must find the mean of all the semester grades that you have. Add up all your semester grades and then divide by the number of semester grades. Each letter grade is assigned a value. Some schools weight on a different scale, or don’t even have a finite weighted scale. Instead, they may add x amount of points to your unweighted GPA for an honors class and y amount of points to your unweighted GPA for an AP class.

Heres what I believe it is (based on what my transcript says)

All of grades (ex. 95, 100, 90, 98, 92, 100, 90) divided by the number of classes you took (7)
And you get your semester cumm. Average.(95)
(and your GPA would be 4.0)

There you go!
