HS Freshman Schedule

Biology Regents
Algebra 1
AP World History I
Spanish 2
PE

PLTW Principles of Biomedical Sciences

Final schedule, thoughts?

I think this is definitely rigorous-ish schedule for your first year in high school. What is the normal schedule for freshman at your school? How many regents/APs are usually taken?

Do you think colleges that are OOS will see Regents as rigorous? I will show you the classes ninth graders at my school can take.

English-
English 9 Regents

Science-
Biology Regents
Biology Honors

History-
Global History 9 Regents
AP World History I(will take exam in tenth)

Math-
Algebra 1 Regents

LOTE-
Spanish
French

PE-
Physical Education
Lifeguarding

Electives-
Theater
Ceramics
Studio Art
Design and Drawing for Production
Biomedical Science
Career and Technical Education
Construction
Communications
TV Broadcasting
Robotics
Video Game Design
Computer Science
Drawing and Painting
Music In Our Lives
Band
Music Fundamentals
Chorus
Orchestra

Do you think a regents in 3/4 of the core subjects is rigorous?

Thanks:)

@yonceonhismouth

Obviously they will see Biology H as more rigorous, which in your case, is the only thing that would make your schedule more rigorous. However I wouldn’t stress out about it. At many schools, there are no honors classes for freshman, so work on acing your courses.

Actually, the Chairperson of our district told me that if I have no intention whatsoever to major in the sciences, its not worth it to take it Honors, as everyone who takes honors bio in ninth just goes straight to regular the next year anyways. I get straight A’s in regular courses, and in advanced(took some in middle school) I get A’s and rare B’s. I am already expecting a hit at my GPA due to enrolling in an AP class as a freshman(which is a very rigourous AP). Any more questions? Lol sometimes when people ask me questions it helps me realize things @skieurope

I don't understand the science thing for next year. Are you saying there is no honors option for Chemistry at your school? Have you asked what the differences are between regents and honors? Have you talked to kids a year or two older who have taken the courses? If you are happy with the regents vs honors science, then it is a good schedule.

As to your question about whether other schools will see regents as rigorous? My guess is if they have had a good number of NY applicants, then they will see regents as expected. In the olden days, it was rigorous but nowadays it's required for pretty much everyone anyway. What will matter for rigor is whether your high school guidance counselor who will be marking it on your college apps will consider it rigorous.

Why are you taking biomedical science if you don't have an interest in a science major?

Hi @mom2twogirls Thank you for your response. Chemistry Honors is offered in tenth grade to kids who have already taken Earth Science Regents in eighth grade, those kids go onto Biology Honors, with the exception of a few who were in regular science go onto Biology Honors in ninth grade(I scored an 82 on a test, and it pushed me down last quarter, resulting in me to take regents, which I am fine with taking. Honestly the GC’s say honors is 4x the work, and the only difference is that with honors you can get bragging rights and doesn’t even say 4x the work in our course description handbook. It goes in depth the same as far as units and labs, but most Biology Honors students take the SAT II Biology in June(something I am not interested in). Lots of straight A students take regents and get 100’s, but when some go into honors, the pressure and 4x the work hurts them, and due to school statistics, it ultimately feels safer to take Regents level biology. As I described them both, my GC will basically make them sound like the same thing. Biomedical Science is solely out of interest in diagnosing and anatomy. My old eighth grade science teacher and I talked about surgery, medical stuff, and she recommended me to take it, to further an interest. I would never major in it, and luckily Regents and Biomed compliment each other nicely. I know engineers who adore literature or politicians who obsess over comic book art. I guess you could say I am a writer who likes medicine. Thank you again, and I hope you respond

Ok. It sounds like you’ve really done your research in determining that biology regents is the best spot for you. That told you more than anyone here could tell you because different schools (even in NY) do things differently. For example, in my kids’ district, the advanced science class is living environment/biology honors, not earth science. I was surprised but my daughter explained that it’s because regular 8th grade science is biology, so taking the high school level class is basically a more in depth version of 8th grade science. For 9th grade, kids either take earth science regents, earth science honors, or they skip earth science and go right to chemistry honors.

Selective colleges want to see honors classes; since freshman year isn’t much different with or without honors biology you should be fine, especially since you’ll be in an AP class* but you’ll be expected to have honors English, math, and science in 10th grade, and probably LOTE if offered.

  • although it's a very hard, demanding class, since an AP class covers 4months of college material over a year, and you're taking part 1, it means you'll be taking the equivalent of 2 months of college classes over a year, which should make it doable.

@MYOS1634 has a very valid point. While your AP class will be rigorous, it will be significantly less rigorous than it would be if you were taking it in 1 year like kids at my school do.

APWH is broken down into two years at my school @Shanban1607 @MYOS1634

Thanks! @mom2twogirls

@skieurope @mom2twogirls I have spoken with my parents and GC in a meeting for a pre-orientation meet and greet and we all feel it is best for me to take Biology Honors, as I get A’s and should challenge myself, thanks again!

Good luck!
And don’t under estimate the APWH class. It’s broken into 2 years at my kids’ school as well. My guess is it’s done that way in most NY schools as a parallel to regents Global History 1&2. I think people expect that the work done in another school’s 1 year course is just divided by 2 and therefore easier. From what my daughter’s teacher said to parents, our school teachers both at the college level as far as amount of reading/writing and depth. I think the only way to really know if it’s easier the way our schools do it would be to also experience it as a one year course. Anyway, that’s a long way of saying my daughter had quite a lot of reading and writing in her first year of the two year APWH, so make sure to stay on top of it.

Cool schedule! It looks very similar to mine except my high school does not allow us to take APs yet.

Have a good day!

So there is no advanced math track? Will you be able to take calculus in your senior year if you want to?

Hi, update I am taking honors biology. I could take Geometry, but I didnt do Algebra 1 in eighth grade, so I can’t. I will take Geometry in sophomore year, Algebra II in junior, and Mathematical Topics in senior year, which is like university level calculus, thanks! @halcyonheather

Hi, I found out my teachers today… Are you happy with yours? @anthonytheboy I am happy with them all, its just some of the kids in some of my classes are really mean :frowning:
