So I know that you can have whatever major you like and as long as you fulfill the pre-medical prerequisites you can apply to med school, but I was just wondering if you guys actually know of anyone that went this route. Were they successful?

To answer your question, this is quite common at Penn. In fact, most of the HSOC majors I know here are pre-med, so this is definitely a great path to follow if you’re interested.

HSOC is the Health and Societies major at Penn’s CAS. It’s superrr interesting! You can find more about it on the College of Arts and Science website.

And thanks for the replies guys! Do you know when you get to talk to your adviser for classes/pre-professional stuff? I would love to get to know about my options etc! As you can tell…I’m a very eager kid =P

Haha I think you get to talk to your advisor during late spring/summer when RD is released. Pretty sure registration isn’t until…July? I forget xD but it’s around that time.

Until then, though, enjoy your last year of high school (but not too much…still gotta have reasonable grades)! Have fun with friends and enjoy your time with them before you go off to college ;)

I just took a HSOC class this semester and loved it. My professor was strongly encouraging people to do the HSOC route even if you’re premed but she may be slightly biased. It’s possible I know a couple people trying it but are a year or so away from applying to med school.

History of Surgery with Beth Linker. Don’t remember the course ID number but it’s a freshman seminar, definitely look into it next year if you can get into it. It’s a very good class, especially if you’re interested in medicine and HSOC, and professor Linker is a great teacher.
