Huge Decision - UT Business Honors or Northwestern University?

[quote=]
this is no contest. I say Northwestern. Going to NU for less money should be hard to pass up. Also, NU is considered to be a 'target' school for top consulting/business companies, while Utexas isn't...

Ignorance is bliss.

I'd say they are both targets but NU is a heavier target by IBanks.

Here's search engine for campus events by Goldmans Sachs:
Goldman Sachs (move the cursor to "Career" and click "Recruting Events"

I see it has two events planned at Northwestern:
Americas
Northwestern University- Why Work on Wall Street Presentation. Job Reference: 1060762 16 Apr 2008
Americas
Northwestern University- Internship 101 Presentation. Job Reference: 1060764 16 Apr 2008

It has no event listed (at least not yet) for Austin.

If you go to UT-Austin, grads are widely recruited by Texas's energy industry as well as finance. The finance industry may be hiring again by the time you graduate.

UT-Austin has the better city, better football and better women.

i dont really care about football that much. women sure, but they're great ones at every school. haha.

Well then, UT also has better libraries, museums, and performing arts venues than Northwestern. Of course, Northwestern has Chicago proximity to balance it out, but UT has the on campus advantage.

Northwestern has one of the best performing arts/music programs in the country; there are lots of concerts and shows on campus. Off campus, there's Chicago of course.

UCBChemGrad,
Care to explain how Austin is better than Chicago-Evanston? Have you been to either place actually? I have and I am very puzzled why you said that. Also, the OP asked about IBanks specificly, not oil companies.

thank you all so much for your advice, it was an extremly hard decision to make, and i know i could be really happy and fit in really well at both schools--unfortunately, i can only choose one of these premier institutions to attend!

I decided on Northwestern, for a variety of reasons. One of the primary factors being its location (THINK SNOW), distance from home, overall repetution and prestigious economics program, as well as the calibre of its student body.

the UT BHP would have also given me many fine opportunities, but i think its time i moved on, and experienced the world, living in a totally different state from the one i was raised in.

no hard feelings guys, i just feel that NU is a "better" fit. tbh i can't really explain this feeling, i just have a good feeling in my heart about this decision. thank you all so very much. when it comes down to it, the choice was like choosing between two ice cream flavors--both very tasty, its just a matter of preference and "fit."

thanks to all who replied and offered me advice. my parents also agreed with my choice (funny enough lol).

Sam,

First, its UCBChem*E*Grad. ;)

Yes, I've been to Austin. Yes, I've been to Chicago. No, I have not been to Evanston...why would I go to a Chicago suburb? I say this because UT is right in the heart of Austin...Evanston is what? a half-hour train ride away? Austin is known as the live music capital. I'd rather see a concert than some school play.

I was pointing out that UT is a target school for the oil/energy industry. Many UT business grads are hired by energy companies due to proximity.

UT is also probably cheaper for the OP because he's in-state.

UT IB-14% Consulting 13% That's quite a few.

Banking (Investment) $59,600 $4,785 14%

Consulting Services $54,693 $5,210 13%

He already said that NU was cheaper for him, once FinAid is taken into account.

NU has a music school and a drama school that have graduated some of the top talent in the country -- and that honed their skills at performances on campus. Think Ann-Margaret, Warren Beatty, Stephen Colbert, Jane Curtin, Marg Helgenberger, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Schwimmer. To name just a few.

UCBChemEGrad,
Just try to make you more informed on this one (the OP said he has decided anyway). Evanston shares the boarder with Chicago actually; technically, it takes about 10-min bike-ride heading south along the lakefront to enter the city limit of Chicago from Northwestern. What you heard about the 30-min (Evanston Express)/45-min train (regular train) ride is from Evanston to Chicago downtown. Chicago is much much more than just the downtown however. Pretty much all the neighborhoods along the lakefromt and north of downtown are nice neighborhoods and areas like Lakeview/Lincoln Park (think West Hollywood/Santa Monica with much higher density of restaurants and stores) or Argyle (2nd Chinatown) are actually closer to NU than UChicago.

Evanston is not some sleepy suburb. Believe it or not, downtown Evanston is denser and more walkable than anywhere I saw in Austin. It has more restaurants, shops, bookstores..etc within walking distance of each other than Westwood. It also has a multiplex movie theater (in 2005, "Best of Chicago" issue of Chicago Magazine named it as the best multiplex theater in the Chicagoland area). Everything is available without you having a car.

You made the right choice John. NU is in Chicago for all intensive purposes. I would say that Evanston has even more of an urban feel than UT-Austin. Also there is no doubt that NU is considered more prestigious than Texas. You will love it there, and more than enough diversions to keep you busy. Good Luck!

UCBChemEGrad,
One more thing, the OP said NU is virtually free to attend while UT is gonna cost $5000/yr. I guess you missed that part. No, I don't try to convince people to incur a lot of debts just to go to my alma mater. It's not my style. ;)

^ Fair enough...yes, I did miss the cost part.

@ johnlee24

Choose Northwestern. Chicago is one of the major financial centers in the world. A great place to do an internship. The economics department is excellent and there are plenty of undergraduate research opportunities for economics majors.

I'd take David Schwimmer off that list. For obvious reasons.

^ LOL...yes...in his place you can put the new housewife from the lame Bravo TV series "Real Housewives of New York City"...
