And i might take AP stat next semester

As you can see, i slacked off freshman and sophomore year but I have a huge upward trend.

EC's-Over 400 hrs volunteer community service including 3 missions trips, hundreds of hours of tutoring kids and more. I went to summer school/program at University of Chicago. Varsity tennis 1 year(will be two).
Got two years of language tutoring (not cause im dumb, but cause i want to learn). One in Spanish and one in Japanese.

Other crazy info- Many of my relatives on dad's side of family went to Berkeley. Dad, his brother, three of his cousins, his uncle, his parents, his mothers parents, and the father(of my grandma) and his dad and uncle.
If i attended i would be 5th generation. My great grandfather was also the head of UC board of Regents in the sixties or seventies(cant remeber exactly). In total my family has donated at least 10 million 2 the school.

and also
My uncle went to GeorgetownUG, and Northwestern Gradschool if that counts for somethin.
and
One of my Uncles is the head of the Philosophy dept at Amherst

Have outstanding essays, and probably will have outstanding rec's from my counselor and teachers.

I want to Double Major in Japanese/Economics, or Japanese/international relations.

(all schools for college of sciences)
Schools
NYU CAS ED( #1 choice of course)-
Johns Hopkins-
Boston University-
Boston College-
Middlebury-
Colgate-
University of Chicago-
Fordham-
Wellesly-
Northwestern-
Northeastern-
Tufts-
Univeristy of San Francisco-
UCB-
UCLA-
Amherst-
Sarah Lawrence-
Brown(what the heck)-
Columbia(what the heck#2)-
UCSD-
DePaul (business)-
Loyola University of Chicago-
UCI-
uDUB-
Penn State UP-

wow those schools run the gamut of charactersitics....what are you looking for? big/small? urban/suburban/rural? big school spirit and community or more off campus activities individually? sporty/artsy? do you want greek life?
focus your interests a little more, and your list should become more apparent.

I want a school woth good business majors (in a school of sciences)

I really really want the schools to be in a Huge major city, and if not, at least very near.

I dont really like california though so there's only 2 real ca schools i would consider though (usf and ucb) cause i love san francisco (berkeley is right next to it)

I like seasonal places(it snows everywinter)

terrific. now we can get somewhere.

you can cross of:
-Middlebury and Colgate are very rural and nowhere near a big city.
-Amherst- cute little town, definitely not urban or near urban
-Penn State- obviously big college town, but located in the middle of nowhere pennsylvania.
-sarah lawrence- dont go there for business.
-i assume you mean wesleyan and not wellesley- wellesley is all women. and wesleyan is very suburban, not near city (unless you count hartford...)

no
i dont want colgate and middlebury crossed off
cause i want great language programs.

I heard Colgate is really good, and hear from everyone that middlebury is the best...and those are two colleges i know for a fact i will apply too.

What do you think my chances for middlebury are?
Colgate?

oh
and i plan on taking at least 3 foreign languages. in college...possibly through the advanced level in each.

I think for spanish ill start of at the intermediate
and japanese at the second begginer level.

i also want to take italian which i would probably do after i finish intermediate levels of spanish.

and maybe even go for mandarin

dude *** you're a male

Wellesley is all girls
Sarah Lawrence is 75% female and also the most expensive college in the nation

And can you seriously imagine yourself at every single one of your safeties?
"DePaul (business)-
Loyola University of Chicago-
UCI-
uDUB-
Penn State UP-"

Get rid of all but one of those. Utterly unnecessary! I've seen top-heavy lists galore but a bottom-heavy list is just silly. No offense to those schools, just saying considering your stats, etc.

You have an amazing number of unrealistic reaches unless your family is willing to give another million. If they've given 10, what's one more, then you can go anywhere!

Berkeley doesn't consider legacy, but like any school they consider major gifts, so that's clearly the best school you'll get into.

man, you really need to think about what you want in a school. i really think you have too many reaches on that list. you're going name/prestige-shopping, which is a horrible idea. talk to your guidance counselor and don't spend any more money.

well
what would a nyone say about
NYU ED
Hopkins
Northwestern
Colgate
Middlebury
BC
tufts

cause those are my top choices

im not going to apply to all of them

and same with safeties
i wil only apply to a few safeties

oh

basically
i need the school to have japanese and economics cause thats what i want to double major in

and
more languages would be nice.

and urban setting ideal.

ide like to take japanese through the advanced level (and study abroad in japan)

spanish through advanced
and italian too

and
probably mandarin

Everyone of those schools is a considerable reach. You're not being realistic. While your Act is good, you're not otherwise in range.

thats not what most people say about nyu ed cas

their average gpauw is 3.6
so mine is barely lower
and my act is 4 points above their average

That is indeed the only school I see as your having a real shot at. But you also have to look at class rank. At a lot of schools a 3.6 means more. NYU could go either way. Also, do you need aid? I would not expect a dime from NYU with your stats.

I'm sure there have been larger chance lists before... but this certainly is towards the top. I'm just going to give my opinions on your top choices.

NYU ED
Hopkins
Northwestern
Colgate
Middlebury
BC
tufts

The fact that your grades are on an upward trend and the fact that you got all 5's on your AP's.. your GPA and class rank won't hurt you so much for college admissions... I'd say you are much better off than most people with 3.5 UW GPA's.

Nice job on the ACT! With that alone, you have a good shot of getting into NYU ED.

Still.. Hopkins, Northwestern and Middlebury are all Reaches.
Colgate, BC & Tufts (unless it has the "Syndrome") are all Matches.
NYU RD would be a High Match.. NYU ED is a Match & the school you probably are most likely to get into.

Good luck!

Coola, you're out to lunch here. A high ACT won't make up for low grades at those schools, not even close. Mid is on record as tossing out an app with great grades and a single C. Too many kids with good all around stats.

well it does make up slightly

as in
if im in the lower 30th percentile of a school gpa wise
but my test scores are 90th percentile+...it kinda evens out
my gpa is slightly (slightly) worse than the NYU average, but test scores way way way higher

and a perfect upward trend (straight A's with challenging courseload)

and he said midd is a reach

The GPA is the single most important factor. When they see high test and low GPA they think lazy and underachiever. Sorry, but I just don't think schools of this calibre need to take the chance.

Competition definitely is tough, but what I was saying was that he is better off than most people with 3.5's. A 34 ACT is above average for just about every school in the country! Since he is applying NYU Early Decision, it also shows that he shows interest in the school. (People definitely get into NYU with around 3.5 GPA's... most have rigorous courseloads, passion-demonstrating EC's and high test scores.)

Middlebury, of course, is a Reach. It's a Reach for just about everyone.

I know of people with so-so GPA's and high standardized test scores getting into really good schools and vice-versa. (Maybe not the HYPSM level.. but certainly the level of BC and NYU!)
