I'm curious if anybody on CC applied this year or if 'we' know of any applicants. Guess the application deadline has just passed. Is there any word on how many apps they received this time?

It says they want one year of chemistry and one year of biology - I'm taking one year of college chemistry now, but am not taking biology. I took AP biology in high school and scored a 4 on it, thus opting to test out of taking intro biology at Rice (this was before I found out about Mt Sinai's program). Will they mind? I took Honors Biology and AP Biology in high school, so it's not like I'm completely unfamiliar and new to biology.

I mean, I guess it's still possible for me to register into the 2nd half of intro biology for spring semester... but I'd be sort of behind and out of the loop with the rest of the kids who took the 1st half of the intro bio course this semester.

Any input would be appreciated.

Edit: Nevermind... found the answer on the FAQ page, heh. Sorry, disregard this post.

hotasice, are you applying for next year? What is your major?

I'm double-majoring in Chemical Engineering and History. I'm most likely going to apply next year :) It won't hurt to give it a shot.

What about you?

I chose economics as my major. It is a very tough process, but I agree, worth a shot for anyone! There is a $100 application fee though.

Did anybody hear back yet?
Sorry for joining so late!

Hi, I will transfer to Columbia next year for Mechanical Engineering with Francophone studies and east asian languages as two concentrations. I want to apply to the H&M mt sinai program, but i would have to do a MAJOR and choose francophone studies or east asian languages. Is it worth it to do the whole major? Do you think H&M program would take a double major in engineering and francophone studies or east asian languages?
Shades_children???? Anyone else in the HuMEd program , what do you think?

Pamela, don't choose the major solely to be a better fit the HuMed program. Even for well-qualified, well-suited candidates, it is a very dicey thing. Roughly 25% are usually called for interview. About 30% of those interviewed get acceptance. So at the time of applying, the chance for acceptance is 0.25*0.3 = 0.08
So, I'd suggest going with the double major (Mech Engg, Francophone studies) you have planned, and still apply for HuMed to try.

Most schools say this, but I genuinely believe they are searching for individuals with outstanding personalities so they can create a well rounded group of people who have an interest in medicine. I’d love to be interviewed when i apply! and of course get in!

Anybody out there this year waiting for the Mt sinai Humanities and arts early acceptance into medical school?

Anyone heard? Does anyone ever get accepted and turn it down?

i’m interested in the program but am a little confused on the school’s requirement preferences. So only 1 year of bio & chem are needed and they want a humanities major? Ive attended a relatively prestigious college but am taking classes from a community college due to a change of major. would it be preferable for me to switch to a state school and work on the humanities degree?

Hey guys,
Glad to see the thread. Has anyone heard if Mt Sinai considers postbacc pre-med students early on in their postbacc studies for admissions to the humanities and medicine program?
Provided that the student excelled in humanities as undergrad?

Thanks!

No. They’re looking for undergrads, not post-baccs.

Given we’ve taken introductory biology and chemistry our freshman year (along with humanities courses), what should/can we take our sophomore year to remain viable on the pre-med track if we aren’t accepted to Mount Sinai’s program? I was going to take organic chemistry I and calculus I but Mount Sinai’s website states that it prefers students who aren’t enrolled in the former class. If I dropped organic chemistry for the first semester, however, I’d only be able to finish organic chemistry II in the first semester of my junior year. Would it be smarter to drop or keep organic chemistry I? For the record, I’m planning on declaring a humanities major while meeting pre-med requirements, so I just don’t want to fall behind should I not be accepted to this early acceptance program.

I think their requirements are rediculous. They may ask organic chemistry is not required, they should not deny those who took it. I am interested in Medical school but not this program. It is absolutely absurd.

Please see this thread for a more recent discussion:

Then don’t apply. Sheesh, it’s just one program for a few students out of 130 allopathic med schools…

They changed the requirements: one semester of organic chemistry is now required. I don’t know how I feel about this–it was changed mid-application cycle.

Humanities/Social Sciences major
1 year chemistry
1 semester of organic chemistry
1 year biology
