Humanities and Medicine Early Acceptance Program at Mt Sinai?

So, are the year of bio, the year of chem, and the semester of orgo a requisite to apply, or can you have taken, say, a year of bio in freshman year, be enrolled in Chem and take a semester of orgo during your sophomore year? Or do you have to complete them before you actually go to Mount Sinai Med School?

Sorry. I found the answer in their website: “Science courses need not be completed before application to the program.”

Yes, some students do turn the program down after acceptance. My daughter has a few acquaintances who have done so. Those that do are usually so highly qualified (and go on to take the pre-med requirements later on) that they have many choices up the road.

My D was an alternate last year and everyone accepted so they did not go to the alternate list. She was told there was a chance that someone might not come the summer before senior year, but slim.

So did she have the opportunity to attend the summer session, in case someone later drops out an she is invited to med school? Tough to be an alternate, because switching to traditional pre-med schedule probably reduces your chances of later being picked up for Humanities & Med program if someone declines, and not switching to pre-med probably makes it hard to get accepted to med school anywhere else. What did you daughter do?

My friend just got in…

BUMP!
What was your friend’s profile? What undergrad institution? What major?

Hi everyone! I (sadly) didn’t know about this program until now and I missed the deadline for applying as a sophomore. Do you know how many applications from juniors they generally consider? Thanks so much!

^Not the end of the world at all!
Statement 'BS/MD programs usually set the GPA requirements much lower than 3.5. There wouldn’t be much of an advantage going the BS/MD route if you had a maintain a 3.5. The bar is usually set at 3.2 or 3.0. " is incorrect. There are many advanatages even be in program that requires MCAT.
• having normal UG experience when everybody around is panicky about their Med. School chances,
 • taking MCAT with the knowledge that all you need is 27 will make you score much higher,
 • going to interviews (if decided to apply out) while already been accepted to one Med. School makes you much more “normal” person than regular “trembling” Med. school applicant. You actually might enjoy your interview visit, focus on learning more about school.

i want to apply!! i’m a freshman… however i’m scared because they apparently had an acceptance rate of ~6%?! oh my… i wish i knew the statistics of some people who were accepted. does anyone who was accepted want to take pity on me and answer a few questions?? :)

The new application for 2012 was supposed to be up yesterday 7/1. does anyone know why it’s not yet available?

Chill, it will be uup sometime this week. Also no need to re open this thread seeing as there are already others of the like. Best of luck when the application is available; I am applying as well.

Can you guys please help? The application instructions request official SAT scores, but they also say to NOT have collegeboard send the scores directly to Mt Sinai because Mt. Sinai does not have a code. My high school doesn’t have my official sat scores and my college says they cannot release them. I called collegeboard and they said they cannot send official scores to my home. The instructions mention that “A photocopy or web shot of your SAT/ACT scores is also acceptable” but the only scores online are the ones on my unoffical score report. Any suggestions? I’ve been scambling around to try to get everything in order but I’m at a loss now. Any help would be really appreciated!

I’d really appreciate some enlightenment about this program on the following issue:

As a current science major, what happens if I formally “switch” my major to the humanities just for the sake of applying? My classes for the first two years are pretty generic pre-med reqs/gen ed. reqs for ANY major. If I don’t get in, couldn’t I simply change my major back to a science and continue on the traditional route?

Not saying I’d do this but it’s just something interesting to discuss.

There are biology majors who are selected to interview–this I’ve heard from someone accepted into the program. But they are trying to see through applicants who aren’t seriously interested in the social sciences/humanities and just trying to find an easy route to med school. I’m sure that hundreds of applicants switch their major for the program and apply anyway.

That being said, if a person wasn’t admitted into the program and unable to fit in the social science/humanities major without the slightly fewer reqs of the program, he/she is free to make a choice for themselves.

Has anyone received a call to schedule an interview for this program? The website says prospective applicants willed be contacted in October.

Bump. Anyone receive an interview request?

Today is the first day of notifications. Please post if you hear from the Admissions Office.

Closing this thread as there is another Mt. Sinai HuMed thread that is more active.
