humboldt transfers

I'm currently a sophomore at a competitive college in the Midwest majoring in biology as a pre-vet student and would like to transfer to humboldt in spring 2011. I decided that I want to major in marine biology and major/minor in zoology. I've researched Humboldt state university and I think it looks like a really good fit for me and i've seen good reviews on their science program. I would really like to know a few things about humboldt. Are transfer students accepted easily by the other students (I won't know anyone there)? even when entering in the spring semester? Are there many out of state students? Do many people stay in arcata to take summer classes (I'll need to to gain residency)? and where would be the best place for a 2nd year transfer student to live? (I would really like to meet other students so I'd like to know where the best dorm would be for me)

Son graduated from Humboldt in 2008. Started as out of state (there seem to be quite a few) and got instate residency at the end of his freshman year. He had both transfer and kids who started there as friends. Many were met through clubs. Don’t know if taking classes will help you gain residency but working will. He was in the dorms the first year and apartments the second. I would think you will want to live with students for sure where ever you end up.
Make sure you read this first:
Spring 2011: HSU will conditionally accept applications between August 1 and August 31, 2010, from first-time freshmen, upper division transfers, and returning HSU undergraduate students ONLY. (Terms are subject to change. Applications will NOT be accepted for lower division transfers, 2nd bachelors, or unclassified post-baccalaureate students.)

Although the Admissions Office will process spring applications, acceptance will depend on the final 2010-11 California state budget. When the new budget is passed, HSU will notify applicants if we are unable to accommodate your applicaton. If enrollment funding is increased, the Admissions Office will accept eligible pending spring applications. If not, applicants will have the option to either withdraw their application and receive an application fee refund or to defer their application to the Fall 2011 application cycle.
