Hume/Honors

How close knit is the honors program and dorm at UF? Is it like everyone in honors is sort of one group for the most part or do most of them have best friends outside of honors?

I'm not sure about the answer to your question, but I do know there are many kids (my daughter and some of her friends) who choose not to live in Hume, but still take the honors classes.

My s lived in hume last year and most of his friends were not in Hume or in honors. The three guys he is living with this year were not honors.

So you can sort of pick if you want to get really close with the honors group or basically be just in the general college population?

Yes, you will only be in 1 honors class this fall, the rest are with the rest of the freshmen. You will meet people there. Also, when they have the night where the campus activities and clubs have booths, GO. Browse the clubs and see if there is anything you might be interested in. My son joined the surf club and that is where most of his friends are from. He is also really into the music scene in Gainesville and regularly goes to shows downtown. I have read on this forum that there isn't much to do in Gainesville, but from talking to my son, he is having the time of his life. Put yourself out there, and you will find many opportunities to meet people. You may be lucky and find that the honors kids are your cup of tea. My son made friends with honors kids and liked his roommate, but he ventured out and found others who have more in common with him and who have become his best friends at UF.

I hope that answers your question!

Two questions about the honors program and Hume hall: first, is Hume Hall more expensive than the regular dorms? Second, how good are the honors courses really; could you give me a couple of examples of honors courses?

Thanks.

Yes, it is more expensive, but it is REALLY nice, brand new and clean! My S took a writing course for pre-med majors and found it to be very informative, and pretty hard. He is really excited to be taking a writing course this fall called "Love and Writing", apparently the prof is great and the class is really interesting. (he loves to write) Some of the classes seem kind of crazy, like a Survivor's (the TV show) class, you can look at the course catalog on the honors web site.

I'm in Hume right now. It's beautiful.

Hey I have a question for honors students at UF: were you accepted solely based on GPA and test scores, or did UF look at other details. I know they recently changed their policy; does this change apply to you?

My s was accepted because he was a NMF. He was oos, with great test scores and good GPA (but not great). The change must have taken effect this year and not last.
