Hunt Leadership Scholars Program

Sorry to hear that lots2do. It sounds like you have lots of other possibilities for your son - I hope those work for him! Postmarked the 17th? Interesting since that was a postal holiday. I wonder if they had school that day. Do you happen to know when the departmental scholarships are announced? Still no word here.

@CWSTUDENT, From what I can gather, the departments seem to operate on their own timelines. I know some BBA Scholarships have gone out. Hard to tell from wording on the website if the Business School is done or not. And now that auditions are over at Meadows, scholarship offers may be in the works. I only know what I have gleaned from this forum, the SMU site and visits to the campus. I don’t know about the other departments.

Honestly, I learned a lot from posts by SimpleLife who has a son at SMU (and one at A & M, I believe). Maybe she will visit this forum soon and offer insight on departmental scholarships in her experience.

@cawlegekid123, we are in the DFW metro.

Just got my mail - still no letter - big or small… :/

Small envelope for my d arrived today :frowning: postmarked the 17th
Good luck to all the finalists! Pony up!

Small little letter. :frowning: Dreams are crushed. Not sure if SMU will become a reality.

Sorry to hear @CWSTUDENT and @Satxmom1957. Better luck with lesser known scholarships and other opportunities!

Good of you to post mtmt32 so that people know not “everyone” got it. We were actually at SMU on 2/18 for a campus visit, etc. for 4 hours of stuff. My son met with his advisor, but I don’t think he asked, nor did she mention it. We just got home to the SF/Bay area late Wednesday night, so I don’t yet have my mail from our neighbor. Not holding out too much hope…

Hello! Sorry in advance - first time poster on here!

If an applicant is a finalist for the Hunt Scholarship, does this mean that they are NOT considered/is not a finalist for the President’s Scholar Award? Also, could someone please help with explaining what Hunt Provides as I am still not clear - when it says “full tuition and fees less the amount of the leading state public school” does this mean that it is not full tuition and fees then? Could someone please explain the “less the amount…” part as I am still a bit confused after reading through the thread and online. Also, does anyone know if Hunt helps with room and board or study abroad, or even meals etc? Wondering what falls under “and fees”… Any help is much appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

So I actually just got some of this answered… I am a Hunt finalist! I got some clarification on the finances… So Hunt covers the difference between SMU’s tuition and that of the leading state public university (UT Austin in my case). Can anyone provide information about other scholarships one could receive along with Hunt? I received the Cornerstone Scholar Award, but if I receive the Hunt, it will no longer apply. Because the Hunt only evens the cost to a public university, are there other ways of making SMU more affordable? Still waiting to hear on financial aid, but it’s likely to be tricking as my family has the means to pay for college, but are not going to do so (which really makes financial aid a bit complicated). Are there any scholarships that anyone knows of that can be used along with Hunt to help with room and board or study abroad? Or even meal plans etc? I was always under the impression that Hunt was full tuition and fees (and that President’s was full tuition and fees, room and board, study abroad, and excess classes) Which I have now found is not the case. Any information is appreciated, thank you!!

For anyone who has not yet received a letter–large or small–I wanted to mention that SMU made phone calls today to each of the finalists to confirm they had in fact received the letter.

I’m a current Hunt scholar and there seems to be some confusion regarding the amount of the hunt scholarship. When all is said and done, you end up paying about the amount it would cost to go to the leading public university in your home state. It doesn’t pay for meal plans or room/board but that only really matters for fresh/soph year since after that, you’re living off campus (I’ll be living in an apartment which is way cheaper than room/board). Other SMU scholarships are not stackable either unless it comes from a specific college (Cox for example can give out $5,000 scholarships I think). Hunt also covers 2 study abroad trips, one is totally free and the other one is roughly 75% paid for. The kids that receive Hunt though, for the most part, have impressive enough stats/ECs that they receive other outside scholarships to complete the “full ride” since hunt does cover the bulk of SMU costs. You also can’t be selected for both PS and Hunt interviews, the selection comittee sends you to the one that they think you would be better suited for if you applied for Hunt. Also, if you can’t interview on the given dates, Lindsay Davis, the program coordinator will set up another interview time (her info is in the finalist’s letters). It doesn’t hurt your chances (a couple kids my year got it but interviewed a week earlier). Best of luck to everyone!
