Any updates on how Tulane is doing with the storm??

This was the latest:

HURRICANE ISAAC

August 29, 2012, 6 a.m.

Due to the slowness and unpredictability of Isaac, extensive periods of heavy rainfall and wind have affected the New Orleans area, including all of the Tulane campuses.

As we reported last night, there is a power outage on parts of the uptown campus. All residence halls are without power. There has been no air conditioning in the residence halls since 10:30 last night. We anticipate battery power on cell phones and computers might be running low or is out.

We have been in contact with Entergy and they will begin work on restoring power as soon as conditions permit this morning. Temporary power outages are not unusual in any tropical storm or hurricane.

Our staff has received status reports throughout the night on how the students are doing in each of the residence halls and everyone is safe. There is at least one Tulane police officer and emergency medical staff, as well as numerous residence hall advisors in every hall. There are Student Health Center personnel on campus.

Food and water are in ample supply in the residence halls.

Inspections of the residence halls have revealed no major problems. Damage is limited to minor water leaks and a broken window or two.

Senior leadership is getting updates from all campuses and will issue another report by 10 a.m.

Thank you!!!

Just heard from D. She is in Butler. Said they were all fine, sleeping in halls and cells and computers are running low. I have also followed Dr. Cowen on his twitter @TulaneScott as well as a local tv station’s twitter @WWLTV Both have been very helpful.

My daughter said that Tulane is now remaining closed until Tuesday.

In case you missed this from Butler Hall: [Sloopy and Wild Thing - YouTube](<a href=“Sloopy and Wild Thing - YouTube”>Sloopy and Wild Thing - YouTube)

Love the Butler video!

^^^Only in New Orleans. Glad the kids are doing okay.

Agreed, the Butler video was awesome.

It makes sense they will close until Tuesday. Storm moving too slowly to allow for classes tomorrow, and it makes little sense to open Friday when Monday is a holiday. Hopefully the students and staff will be out in force on Friday to start the cleanup, weather permitting. And equally hopefully they will get power back sometime before that.

My boy is in Patterson, one of the outside rooms, so of course they couldn’t stay in the room last night, so he started out planning to sleep in the hall, but the powers-that-be let him head over to Mayer to stay with a friend. He says lots of flooding, one levee broke south, but no where near to Tulane. Running low on cell battery as expected. He’s a scout, so at some point is planning to contact the council office and see where he can pitch in, as no class till Tuesday. Hopefully the university will encourage our students to help out as they can. I recall back when my daughter’s HS class took their yearly trip to Washington DC, a blizzard extended their stay and till the airports opened, many of the students pitched in to clear driveways and such for elderly residents. Helping others seems to take the mind off of your own plight.

Indeed. I know my D will be busy with cleanup around her house and church, but I encouraged her to head over to campus if she could to see if she could pitch in with the clean up.

If I understood the reports correctly, the levee that broke to the south was not built or maintained by the government but instead was a private one. Not sure if we are talking about the same one, though.

The last update from Tulane said it would start shuttles from Bruff possibly tomorrow. Should we be looking for flights to get our kids out because the school is closing?

Haven’t heard from my son since yesterday evening… anyone have any news about SOHO?

Heard from daughter living in Soho about an hour ago. There were a couple of broken windows overnight along with loss of electricity. They were required to sleep in the hall. Power is still out but everyone is fine. They’ve been told trips to Bruff may happen late this afternoon. That’s good news!

There is a VERY active Tulane parents group on facebook. Its an open group. Would strongly suggest everyone here join. Lots and LOTS of good and up to date info.

Although he is abroad and does not currently need it, I put one of these in S2’s hurricane kit.
maplevale - unless there is some special reason for them to come home, this is a great opportunity for them to meet more people, help with the cleanup, and maybe get a head start on some reading for some classes where they already know they have to read some novels, for example. Most likely the electricity will be back on by Friday, and there are enough places at Tulane like Reilly and Bruff that have generator power for them to have places to go if they need to. The wind and rain are supposed to diminish enough that they should be able to work on restoring down lines.

By the time you got them home, they would just have to come back. Doesn’t seem worth the hassle to me, but ask them if they really want to come home. I know a lot of the kids that went home Monday only did so because their parents insisted. Many I talked to really wanted to stay.

August 29, 2012, 5 p.m.

The university is closed tomorrow. Conditions permitting, employees will return to work on Friday. Classes will resume Tuesday, September 4.

Students will have their evening meal at Bruff tonight. Bruff will also be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow. Bruff hours will be posted by resident advisors.

The LBC will be open tomorrow for study and relaxation. No food service will be available at the LBC. The Reily Center will be open tomorrow for Tulane students only.

Entergy officials have informed us that they will begin working to restore power when winds subside, which we anticipate will be sometime tomorrow.

The mayor of New Orleans has imposed a curfew from dusk to dawn today. TUPD will assist in enforcing this curfew.

The next update will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Continue to monitor this website or the Alert Line for more information.

Fallenchemist- I agree- D will want to stay so glad to hear she will not have to leave.
Thanks for the reply.

I’ve been following Scott Cowen’s twitter feed and they’ve been posting pictures of the kids, which I’ve been checking out in search for my son. It remindes me of summer camp! Anyway, it is good to see them looking happy and well cared for.
