Hurricane

i hope there is not a hurricane in the Gulf just before move in day

Atlantic Tropical System a Potential Threat

Holy cow!! I saw that and just said something to my son about how crazy it would be if he had to evacuate before school even started. (He moves in on Tuesday)

These storms happen all the time, and very rarely hit NOLA, especially directly. Even Katrina actually missed NOLA full force, it was the breaking of the levies that caused the devastation. When I was there we had two hurricanes move up the Gulf directly towards NOLA. One got about 100 miles out and took a hard right, ending up slamming into the west coast of Florida (before it got so populated). The other got about 60 miles out and veered to the left, causing extensive damage to New Iberia and related areas, ruining the sugar crop that year. People in NOLA boarded up their windows and got prepared, but it was just a drenching rain for us. Not even really that windy, at least with the first one.

If it does hit, rejoice, for you will experience your first hurrication! No Tulane experience is complete without one.

Lets hope this blows over (pun intended). Until then, the best tracking site I’ve found is this one [Track Tropical Storm Harvey / Stormpulse / Hurricanes, severe weather, tracking, mapping](http://www.stormpulse.com/)

My freshman year (Fall 2008) we had to evacuate for Hurricane Gustav. I think it was like the second day of classes or something? It was definitely a new experience, but everything concerning the evacuation was extremely organized! I was quite impressed with how smoothly the whole process went. Also, I think I remember hearing something that the day they were given the evacuation order for the entire city for Katrina was Tulane’s freshmen move in day. That must’ve been an experience!

you can click on the 1st post and the map updates itself. looks like it will go well east of NOLA

check out this tracking. Really cool! [Stormpulse / Hurricanes, severe weather, tracking, mapping](http://www.stormpulse.com/disturbance-1-high-potential-2011)

^ i really like that sight…just bookmarked it!

Yes- I like it the best of all the ones out there, and I’ve been tracking the hurricanes since before Katrina, having had one kid in Houston (and then S Fla) and the other in NOLA.

I too track all the weather. I farm cotton, corn, beans and rice in the MS Delta. We are impacted to some degree up here too. We are 300 miles due north of NOLA. Landfall on the Texas/Louisiana border is usually the worst for us. Landfall in NOLA or East of NOLA will usually go East of us. However, Katrina got us because it was so big.

It is now a named storm: Irene, but current predictions are for it to be staying east, in the Florida area.

One projections shows a path towards NOLA. All the rest show it aiming for Cape hatteras. A friend in Myrtle Beach is beginning to panic!
