i know that dartmouth sends something like 500 likely letters out in total. do other ivies have a set number of letters they send out, or do they only target intel finalists/ high-achieving minorities and send out very few letters?

Good question. I honestly don't know, but I think they are looking for recruited athletes and academic superstars.

Harvard and Yale send them out. I'm not sure about Princeton.

Darty also does, like you said, Stanford does, Duke does....

And I can assure you personally that being an Intel finalist isn't a guarantee of a string of likelies :p

That being said, though, there are usually 100-300 students at these schools who get likelies and from what I understand, you just have to be one of the top 100-300 applicants. Major awards, athletic recruitment, etc., will make you stand out quickly but there are people on this board who are just very intelligent, passionate, and have great personalities who simply stood out above the rest.

In the end, though, you shouldn't--even if you place 1st in Intel and are All-American in three sports (ok, well, maybe then ;))--wait on likelies, open your mail hoping to see one. Likelies are rare--not to mention a bit finicky (it's early, not all schools have looked at your app, especially in considerable depth). In the end, an accept is an accept. A likely is just a nice little surprise that eases the waiting game a bit :)

Top recruits - whether URM's, high SAT scorers or whatever - are starting to get them by the fi****l as the AQpril 1 notification date is becoming obsolete.

See this Wall Street Journal story from 3 years ago before the situation got as out of hand as it is currently:

even if they do come out, when is it usually?like should they have come by now to the likelies?

Harvard has already sent out all its likelies. They are usually for students who are really talented in athletics and have shown that they can do the work here at Harvard. There are also likely letters for super-talented URMs (national/international something or/and scored 90-percentile or higher where such scores are never heard of)from neighborhoods that historically never send students to Harvard, or even college. Of course, the athletic likely letters are more common.

Are you sure that Harvard already sent out all the likelies? I heard from a friend who is getting recruited that he is still under consideration for a likely...
And his coach told him that they will make a decision about his case next week.So it might be that they will keep sending likelies until relatively closely to the March 30 decision release.

ccers love threads about likely letters :)

I'm sure that they do!

is it true that cornell gives out likelies to the same extent that dartmouth/duke does?

Not sure. I know Duke's number is around 350. How many do Dartmouth + Cornell send?

Dartmouth sends 500

i don't think harvard has sent out all likelies

My sister got a likely (see the other thread) and it was postmarked February 23.

Does your sister occasionally write for the local newspaper?

Yes she does! Why?

Now I know who she is. She'll be a fine addition to the Class of 2010.

Mmm, do we now know where Byerly's interviewing? :)
