HYP..? You know what to do.

Hi there,

I'm an international (I know, ouch, my chances at anything just got lowered by about 50%) looking at applying to HYP etc.

I'm not going to flood you with too many statistics, but instead give you a glimpse at kind of an odd situation:

My SAT score is 2400. My GPA is a neat 4.0.

BUT...

I really messed up in about 9 classes throughout my high school career. I failed a few and made Ds in others. I took an extra year, though and sorted that all out, taking classes as far back as Gr.10, and got all As and A+s in the classes that I bombed earlier. The 4.0 GPA doesn't take into account the classes that I did badly in, but instead the improved mark.

So how will this reflect on me when applying to top schools?

If it counts for anything, my guidance counselor likes me and is willing to vouch for me.

Bottom line is, your GPA isn't 4.0. Everybody's GPA would be a 4.0 if they just cut out those bothersome classes they didn't do well in.

So yes, it will hurt your chances. Those Fs might even kill them. Without any more information, that's all I can say.

But the thing is, I didn't just cut them out. I re-took them and got a great mark in them.

Thanks for the response though.

I'm not sure how colleges will look at the fact that you had to actually take an extra year of school to make up for a multitude of poor grades that you made in earlier years.

International admissions are even crazier than domestic. Especially if you need aid. At my school 1000 internationals applied and only 90 got in, of those half enrolled.

I'm not sure either! That's why I'm asking. :P Actually, I'm just asking out of some kind of obsessive compulsion. I'll be applying either way.

@ haru: That's interesting. I've been trying to find statistics on applying vs. admitted internationals to top schools.

Where do you go to school?
