Hypothetical Chances for Transfer

<p>I've recently decided that I want to go in a completely different direction with school and am already considering schools to transfer to after my first year at RIT. I fairly certain that I want to major in finance and because WUSTL has a fantastic business program, it's one of the schools I'm looking at. I know that some incoming freshmen say this but end up loving the school they attend, and that may end up being the case with me, however, WUSTL, as well as other schools such as Emory and Georgetown have much better financial aid. If I were to transfer to one of those schools, I would not only be getting a degree from a school that has a better reputation, but I would be paying less for it as well.</p>

<p>I suffered from a general lack of caring about my grades for the first three years of high school and earned grades ranging from B to A- for the most part and had a 3.12 GPA after my junior year. My senior year I began to care a lot more and took more challenging courses and did significantly better, earning a 3.7 GPA my senior year.</p>

<p>My HS Stats are as follows:</p>

<p>3.3uw GPA, 4.06W
SAT: 1200 (old)/1800 (new)</p>

<p>I'll be trying as hard as I possibly can to earn all As my first year at RIT to help my transfer chances, and with a college GPA of 3.8+ and a good SAT or ACT retake score I would have a good chance at getting accepted at a majority of very selective schools, as long as my essays/recs are good. I will also be joining crew club, RIT's Rotary club, participating in RIT's theatre productions, newspaper, and perhaps maybe some other ECs</p>

<p>However, I did notice that WUSTL does not accept SAT/ACT scores that were taken after high school. I know that this will hurt me, but I was just curious as to how much. I've been taking SAT and ACT practice tests and have been getting nearly perfect scores on the reading/writing sections and only missing one or two at the most on the math/science sections, so my retake scores would probably be very good.</p>

<p>With all of this in mind, would I have a decent chance to transfer to WUSTL, or would the high school record hurt me too much?</p>

<p>Don't assume that your chances for financial aid as a transfer are as good as they were as a freshman. In a lot of cases, they are not.</p>

<p>Well the only reason why I'm assuming is that the average coverage of financial need by WUSTL is 100%, so every student gets 100% of his or her need covered by WUSTL.</p>

<p>CollegeBoard.com says that 80% of that is in grants on average, so I'm arriving at my conclusion purely by examining the numbers and what my projected financial aid package would be based on the average.</p>

<p>With an EFC of 3500, even if I were to receive $10,000 of my financial aid package in loans, I would still be paying less than what I will be for RIT ($17,000) due to the fact that their resources aren't equal to those of WUSTL. </p>

<p>Even if I were to be paying several thousand dollars more per year, it may ultimately prove to be worth the extra money if it helps me get a significantly better job after I graduate that pays better. That is unless, I end up absolutely loving RIT, which I may, but that's a decision I'll have to make when the time comes, for now, I'm just curious as to what my options would be if I did well at RIT for my first year.</p>
