HYPS MIT Wharton Chances

Np. Also, look at past threads for these colleges (classes of 2017), and you will see for yourself that URM helps a ton.

Thank you. I’ve seen some of the 2018 results too and they’ve given me hope, but there’s nothing worse than getting your hopes up too much. Figured college confidential would be a good resource to get input.

Reverse racism should yield an admittance or two. Even without reverse racism, you would probably be admitted to at least one of the given schools. The chances of admittance to none of the given schools seems vanishingly small to me. Can’t remember if you’ve applied yet, but if you haven’t, be sure to work hard on your essays and recommendations.

Best of luck.

Appreciate the kind words. I didn’t know I had a 36 when applying, so I focused on getting those recommendations and essays perfected as if I needed them to save me from a 20 ACT score. I’d appreciate if you could give my personal statement a read to see if I’m not delusional haha

I agree with @Classof2018app and @Rurouni…Your URM status is a big factor for your admission. You’ll definitely get into one of those schools.

I’d be blessed to attend any of them. That’s great news! For all those without URM status, what could they do with similar stats like mine to stand out in the college application. College Confidential is, after all, a forum to help all in the grueling process that is getting into college. Let’s help the members out. I think if I would have gotten started sooner in my math tutoring Youtube channel and my educational software making non-profit then I would have been a much more difficult rejection. I was too focused on sticking with the traditional club routes that I didn’t take the risk to do truly awesome things. Oh well, now I’ve got this last semester to have fun with those two passions!

Well, since you so eagerly want to help out other Class of 2018 applicants I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me!

I’m also URM with First Generation status and low income.

Scores are superb. I would try to incorporate some volunteer work or additional summer programs if you havent already. Chances are good, competitive at that. Should get into at least one with good essays.

Thanks. I’m willing to pm my essays to those interested in reading them

I personally don’t think hispanic is as strong a URM as black or native american, but I don’t have any data to back that up, just personal experience.

I’d be interested in reading your essays.

I would agree that it is less common for a black or native american student to have top stats than it is for a hispanic one. I would also agree that all three have an important influence on the admissions committee.

Any more chances available?

Good stats…
How many years for each EC?
Any major awards???
Intended major?

Freshman year I didn’t do any activities as I made a difficult transition to my new home in a different part of the country and adjusting wasn’t easy. But since then I’ve been involved with FBLA, Mathletes, and NHS since freshman year. And founded quizbowl and the business society junior year. I did many little activities in between but they were just part of the process of self discovery. My intended major is Electrical engineering or Computer science except for Wharton which is finance. I have a strong interest in entrepreneurship and won 4th place in the FBLA California state competition in Entrepreneurship. I was also in the 95th percentile and won a bronze medal for the National French Contest showing that with a few more years of study I will be fully trilingual. I won the Colorado School of Mines Medal for the top science and math student in the school. I also qualified to go to nationals for the US Geography Olympiad. I qualified for the State MATHLEAGUE.ORG competition, and qualified for the PACE national competition for Quizbowl. I mentioned it already but I was also elected Section officer for my section in FBLA (only 1 in 150 members have this honor)

Don’t listen to other people. Quizbowl is a huge thing for schools. I hope you won something or reached semi/finals so you can write about that. You have very academic ECs which is kind of weird (No community service, no athletics, no arts?) I think these schools will love you 36 on ACT more than the fact you basically only do academic things.

You will get in somewhere, but there is always somebody who does all these things, has perfect scores, does an art and varsity sports. A kid (white) from my school got into Harvard, 2400, 4.20 (Valedictorian, we don’t weight, most valedictorians at my school were around 3.9 or 4.0 previous years) He does quizbowl, mathteam, acapella, captain of a sport, does another sport and president of highschool. Granted, most kids do varsity sports (we have a small school) but I don’t think colleges look down on that. He also has like 5-6 800s on SATIIs. It sounds like I am making this up but he is literally the golden child.

I don’t know how much your URM status will help, but there are kids just like you with better ECs.

Did you interview at Penn? My dad’s co-worker is a Wharton interviewer and she says that tons of kids come in unprepared and it does hurt. If you aren’t good at interviews don’t do it. If so, how do you think it went?

I would be willing to read your personal statement! I am curious to see how a genius writes
Congrats on your achievements this far and I think you excellent chances of being admitted to any of your schools! Good luck!

My school is really competitive in sports. I tried out for four different sports and got cut (I’m no uncoordinated klutz. I just happened to try out for the most competitive sports in our school) and then junior year I ran cross country but I don’t count that as a significant EC so I didn’t include it. Sophomore year I did tech for our drama production and then house crew. In house crew my friend and I broke the all time sales record (even though we were doing a four man job) but I didn’t love it and didn’t do it next year so thats another I didn’t consider as significant. Community service I have over 300 hours. I tutored kids from a school for homeless kids and then another school of underprivileged mainly hispanic students. The latter situation was very similar to mine when I was growing up so it felt amazing to give back now that I was in a different position. I was also the secretary for our California Scholarship Federation and tutored in a special group designated to help freshmen at risk of failing out of school. Throughout all these tutoring experiences I got the idea of starting my own youtube Math tutoring channel. Unfortunately I never had the time to make my channel concrete and presentable enough to put it on my apps (biggest regret) so I only tangentially mentioned it on my activities essay. This semester I’m working on that and on starting my educational software non profit. The nonprofit came as an idea when my school switched to iPads. I saw the potential that software tailored to our teachers’ needs had and am now working to make their visions a reality to improve the classroom experience. Thats another thing I didn’t mention in my app. Even though they’ll never see these activities, they make me happy when I go to sleep at night, so I’m putting all my effort into them.

Ill be taking the physics SAT II this january hoping for an 800 but that kid was crazy. Congratulations to him getting in to Harvard. He deserved it.

I haven’t interviewed for Penn. How would you suggest I prepare? I don’t want to waste an opportunity to leave a positive impression in my app.

And kitts95: I sent it. Tell me what you think! Thanks

New day, new chances?

Incredible Leadership, and incredible GPA

HYPS: Reaches. but they are for anyone.
Wharton: low reach
MIT: High Reach
