Completely disagree with Rurouni. ECs are a huge part of the admissions at these selective universities. Obviously all of these schools have an acceptance rate of of less than 10% so I’d say they’re all reaches. Good GPA, test scores, and URM will help you, but your ECs are pretty lacking.

@BBanks, how many URMs actually get a perfect ACT, high subject tests, and good GPA? practically none, ofc the top schools are gonna take him. Even if his ECs are lacking, hes doing bette rhtan 99% of URMs.

“how many URMs actually get a perfect ACT, high subject tests, and good GPA? practically none” How many kids in the world actually get that? I don’t think the achievement is any more impressive simply because it’s a minority student - it depends on a lot more factors than race. Plus, no top college will admit a student just because of a URM status. It’s all considered in context. If the student is from a wealthy family and grew up with all the advantages that come with it, then race won’t be that much of a factor. It’ll help a bit, but not enough to make up for fairly weak ECs. So I agree with BBanks, they’re all reaches, although not impossible. With schools like HYPSM, you really never know until you get the decision.

Im not saying that its not impressive; Im saying that colleges want diversity. So they are going to take the top URMs, so you have to compare URMs to other URMs mainly. Studies have shown that AA helps mainly the privileged URMs, so it doesnt make that big of a difference whether he’s wealthy/poor

I definitely think you have a shot due to your ethnicity. I’m going to agree with Rurouni on this one… these schools want the top URMs, and I don’t think his EC’s are really that weak either. President of like 5 groups? Not bad, and that 36 ACT will surely stand out. I say you’re in at at least one maybe 2 of those schools.

I must concede that my extracurriculars aren’t anything out of this world. However, I made an impact in my community and took advantage of the available resources. Outside of athletes, I put in the most time in school activities. I’m not banking on my ECs to get me in, but I’m banking on them not getting me denied. In 2012, only 17 Hispanics in the US got 36’s (and that’s counting 35.5 scores). In total, only 144 Hispanics got 36-35’s. I want to maybe naively think one of the schools will want to take a chance on me. I don’t know how big of an impact essays can make, but what I wrote on those things was the best I’ve produced all my life. Thank you so much for everyone’s input, and I hope we all get in to the colleges we want!

HYPS: all reaches
MIT: reach
wharton: reach

Although URM helps, there are more qualified people than you. Nevertheless, you are a strong applicant and just hope you wrote amazing essays. Best of luck to you!

For the next life, what could I have done to be more qualified. I loved my essays and would be willing to private message them to you if you’d like.

Haha I’m not saying you should have done anything else to be more qualified. You are already a strong applicant but I’ve seen stronger. I would be willing to private message their links to you as well . But inregardless, I do not doubt your essays are anything but excellent but my chances are based upon all the applicants. Just check on Harvard 2018 SCEA thread. There are some very excellent applicants there with national/intl. awards.

URM actually helps a ton. If you don’t think that is the case, look at past threads for classes of 2017 for these colleges. People with URM status get in with much lower stats, and that is a fact. Colleges want to show that they have diversity. If they’re blind towards race, then all the colleges will be filled with ORMs (Asian and Indian races), simply because these races have much higher stats than other races. That is why the UCs have a much higher ORM percentage (affirmative action got struck down in the state of California). People who say that URM does little in college admissions are just kidding themselves.

Nope. They are all high matches/low reaches, and I will guarantee you that you that will get into at least 1 of the schools you mentioned. Best of luck.
