i understand that we need to submit a letter from the bank to certify our financial standing along with the i-20 request form. it was stated in my i-20 request form that the letter must certify that i have sufficient amount to pay for the first year's expenses and demonstrate the ability to pay for the next 3 years. The latter is a problem for me. The bank refuses to include such a clause and says it only issue factual statements and not judgemental or predictive ones. Is anyone else facing this problem? Is there really a need to include such a clause? Especially if my family's contribution isn't supposed to come from savings but annual salary?

you can try getting an income statement from your parents' employers. like stating what their yearly salary is and how their employer intends to keep them employed for the next 3 years

hey thanks for the suggestion. i asked around and two of my friends from other colleges did the same thing... will call up my school to confirm its policy today.

i feel so behind schedule... delay after delay... i suppose everyone has filed his/her i-20 request already?

Nope ;)
I was going to send it off today but I forgot it on my desk when I went to school...

i don't need a request form because oberlin kicks butt and will send me one without any paperwork. yay!

You could always talk to the manager and request that something be "arranged".

Thats what most people in Asia actually do. And it works out just fine.

Not in Singapore at least. I spoke to bank officials from two banks and both refuse to budge. I guess they are not very used to such requests coz most Singaporeans go to US on scholarships or parents' full funding (i.e. with 4 years of comprehensive fee in bank), who didn't really need the bank to issue any form of 'judgemental' statement.

Anyway the college guy i spoke to said employer's letter may not work and he's seen students getting denied without the bank letter so he urged me to get one... Well I guess I'll just have to transfer funds from everywhere and pool enough money for the full four years now.

"i suppose everyone has filed his/her i-20 request already?"

Not me!..

neither have i... not until i get that letter done... but apparently my international coordinator didn't seem to think it's very urgent and seemed to think i'm unduly worried... maybe i'm paranoid but then again some guy in the other thread already went for his visa interview??
