I-95 to be CLOSED Sat. and Sun Aug 17 and 18 in Delaware

For anyone travelling back to Cville this weekend, time your trip carefully. I-95 at Rt. 202 near Wilmington Del will be completely closed this weekend. Fortunately, there is a parallel highway I-495. However, beach traffic will cause backups at times.

<a href="http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2013/08/16/construction-closes-i-95-at-u-s-202-interchange-through-monday-in-delaware/%5B/url%5D">http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2013/08/16/construction-closes-i-95-at-u-s-202-interchange-through-monday-in-delaware/</a></p>

95, especially south, through the northern part of VA will be continuously hosed from now through the end of summer, especially during rush hour and during the weekends. The HOV lanes in the middle are closed in the upper neck and there is a temporary entrance about 5-6mi south of where you can normally get on (if not already on from 395). South gets bad Saturdays, North is almost just as bad on Sundays in the late afternoon/evening. Highly suggest traveling on morning/mid-day during the week or on Sundays Southbound, Northbound in the afternoon during the week and on Fridays/Saturdays (I came back a Saturday a couple weekends ago and flew North…Saturday Southbound took 2-3 hours extra that the trip normally takes)

For anyone traveling from the north beyond Va., I highly recommend using I-81 to I-64 into Cville, instead of using any portion of I-95. You can also connect to I-81 south from I-70 west and the Baltimore Beltway/695, which is much more civilized then the DC Beltway. Even if the mileage is longer, it will save you time, particularly because I-81 does not back up and has a 70 mph speed limit in many places.

If you really want to use Rt. 29 to get into Cville from the north and don’t want to drive the Beltway, Rt. 15 also provides a north-south alternative that connects to Rt. 29. However, Rt. 15 is 2 lanes in many areas in No. Va. Rt. 15 is fast and 4 lanes in most of PA. and MD.

81 is a beautiful, traffic free drive, which I did many times out of Pennsylvania. Definitely recommend.

Hazel: minus the trucks and all the state bears (police), hah.

Trucks are easy though, give them distance in every direction and don’t be a turd-driver. Now with the extra lanes down south, 81 is actually fairly nice. And way better than the clustermess that 95 through VA has turned into. I never thought that road could get any worse, but deargod has it

If you want a more scenic way into Cville, you can also take Rt. 20 from the northeast, or Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park (with a $10 per car entry charge).

Traffic on I-81 in Md, WVa and Va has increased over the years, but I’ve never had to slow down because of congestion.

I’m not sure when Tech’s moving in, but if it’s the same day/weekend then that could be problematic. Most NOVA people take I-66 to I-81 to move in for VT. I just remember seeing people not moving on I-66 westbound when I was driving on I-81. I don’t remember if there was an issue with I-81, but it probably wasn’t moving too quickly.
