I-81 shut down indefinitely both directions at Harrisburg PA

I mention this because so many people will be driving to and from Cville over the next couple days. Interstate 81 on the north side of Harrisburg PA is completely shut down in both directions, and may be shut down for weeks. This morning, a tanker truck caught fire and damaged the concrete and bridges. All of the alternate routes are backed up.

Be like the wise men and find another way home.

Ouch. Can people get off at 581, loop around under the city, and get back on 81 via 83?

You can do that, but those roads are backed up on normal days.

Wow, Charlie!! Thank you for the update :)

Argh, I drove home from UVA that way yesterday. Find another way, Charlie is correct, the 581 link was bummer to bummer traffic.

Whoops freudian slip, **Bumper but it was a bummer!!

Wow I always used to go that way. Thanks for sharing the info…

Is 81 still closed ?
If so is 95 the sure bet to NYC?
Thanks to all :)

I just drove I-81 yesterday from Staunton to Harrisburg. It was clear sailing, except there was a pre-existing construction zone in the Harrisburg area and where the accident occurred, but traffic still flowed fine. They removed the overpass that was severely damaged.

Thank you.
