I accepted an offer, and then got accepted off the waitlist at my dream school. What now?

The question is in the title! I accepted an offer recently at one school (school A). However, I recently found out my dream school has accepted me off of their waitlist (school B ). Is there any possibility that I can renege on my accepted offer at school A and take the offer from school B? I just want to figure out my options here.

I understand that reneging on an offer is undesirable for all parties. But I accepted the offer at school A under the premise that I wouldn’t get into school B, and I think I should at least consider this option carefully, given that this is a whole 4 years of my life at stake. It seems like a waste of everyones time to go to school A, and then immediately try to transfer to school B again.

This type of thing is expected and acceptable. Assuming the school B is affordable, you can accept their offer, and send an email to school A telling them that your plans have changed and you will no longer be attending. Congratulations on getting off the waitlist!

You will lose your deposit at school A. Congratulations on getting off the waitlist!

This is completely normal and not unethical. Pay your deposit at the new college. Inform the first college immediately that you will no longer be attending due to a waitlist acceptance. Some suggest that you let the other college know which college you will now be attending.

This happened to my child, who just graduated from the college she was accepted to from the waitlist. Congratulations!

“summer melt” is commo and expected. No problem taking a WL spot. Congrats!

Your school A probably has it’s own waitlist. And when they offer spots off their waitlist they are essentially asking those students to do the EXACT SAME THING that you are contemplating doing. Every single school with a waitlist implicitly encourages this sort of behavior.

So yes, look after yourself first. All it will cost you is your deposit.
