The University of Texas at Austin is listed: the 32nd best university in the world. In addition, Rice University is ranked 102. Such rankings reflect what the universities offer to their respected student bodies. I agree. The University of Texas at Austin is an all-around better school than Rice.

U.S. News rankings are a joke.

mmm....Rice give a lot more undergraduate attention. And probably better training too.

so it depends on what you're looking at. In state public schools will be harder to rank high because they are not as selective. They accept many lower quality in state applicants.

Those rankings are a lot about reputation - a much bigger school like UT is more visible in the world because it has just under 50,000 undergraduates - as compared to 2800 undergraduates. I attended UT, my DD atttends Rice U. Rice U is a much better place for attention and opportunities, and it is a really special place. JMHO. That being said, it is quite possible that my DS will attend UT. It has a lot going for it - but class sizes are huge.

what does DD and DS mean? i know D is daughter and S is son , what's the extra D

Dear daughter and dear son.

Weird, right?

hahahha thats sweet

^^ OH MY GOSH...ive been wondering what DD or DS meant for so long! I thought it was like...Dad's daughter...meaning you were the stepmother or something...so confused.

If you are locked in a spot at your first choice school, why bother study properly for the SAT/ACT? Either you prepare for the ACT/SAT as a Texas Resident and go to schools that you do not want to go to, or you keep your spot in 10% by preparing for your 4.0 GPA. If your school is competitive, and you are in top 15%, transfer your senior year to a low performig school. Anyways, Rice does not rely on 10% rule. Thus, stats do not show true mold of student body. If properly prepared, UT at Austin Freshman ACT/SAT scores would be higher. IMHO.

IF UNC Chapel Hill Freshman had the 10% rule, there Freshman GPA's would go up, but ACT/SAT scores would go down.

Selective does not always mean better. If, say, Rice has about 4,000 students as you mention, then, I will guarantee that UT at Austin has atleast 4,000 "more" qualified students. Yes, not every student at UT at Austin compares to Rice students. However, professors at Ut at Austin are, in my opinion, much more accomplished than Rice professors.

unccharlotte, you are entitled to your opinion, regardless of how informed or ill-informed it is.

unccharlotte-that ranking of yours...is it for undergrad? or just overall?

The study includes graduate level education.
