I am applying to the Stanford Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills internship as a sophomore undergrad. I am wondering what experiences to write about for securing a spot in the program. I have had clinical experience before shadowing a physician but I have never done any research or seen a real heart before or anything. So my question is how do I stand out? Sure, I am interested in this internship because doing surgery on the heart sounds very cool and I love hands-on stuff and I am passionate about medicine. But I don't believe that's enough...it's a very competitive internship so i am stuck on how to go about making myself shine when I haven't done much.
