i'm from hawaii and i am the first to go to college in my family.
my parents are from korea and they don't speak english well and so i have to do all the financial aid paperwork
however, i'm extremely confused and i feel like i have no one to help guide my decision.
i filled out the fafsa and our efc was exactly $3k
i applied to UWashington and USF, both schools offered me money
UWashington - basically i need to take out a 25k loan every year. is there any way they would give me more money?? i'm unsure because i am out-of-state. their entire tuition + EVERYTHING = $32k
USF - i would only need to take out a $10k loan, however because it is a private school i was wondering if they would be willing to give me more money. tuition + EVERYTHING = $40k
this is such a dilema for me. i know USF is giving me more money and it would put less stress on my parents however i REALLY want to go to UW because of their excellent pharmacy program.

in addition,i'm afraid to call the financial aid office and i know my parents can't; i just don't know how i'd ask for them to give me more money.
please help!

You can call and ask for a phone appointment with a financial aid administrator, so you do not catch someone on the fly. Then let them know your situation, your parents income and your EFC. The loans put you way over what the government allows with their loan levels and way over what kids are generally taking out according to USN&WR stats. With your parents income where it is, they cannot pay any loans. Present the case to them.

I don't think UW will be very supportive being that it is a state school and needs to provide for their taxpayers first. You can try, but I doubt you will get much from them. This is usual for out of staters applying to other state colleges. Unless a good merit award comes through, the aid is usually not competitive. Maybe USF can come up with a bit more, it does not hurt to try.

Is the SIR due on MAY 1st for those schools?

Send me a message through CC if you want to and I'll give you my AIM sn and I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

The thought of not being able to go to your college of choice because of financial reasons is a real pain. I know.

I struggled for 13 days trying to get things straight to recieve a better financial aid package from a college.

Result: 10k more in grants

My advice to you: present your case and DO NOT GIVE UP
