Help with financial aid, and schorslarships

Hello, I have gone through the application process for college, now im working on all the financial aid stuff. The problem that I come to is that my parents lost their job at the end of 2009, but their income was not really affected for their taxes, as it was just around $2000 less. So for EFC came out around $7000, I have been applying to scholarships, but I am not sure if it will be enough. Will colleges or other institutions take into consideration the fact that my parents are unemployed, or will it only matter for financial aid of next year (with next years taxes report showing it). If anyone has any suggestions about what I could do, or how to prove it to schools, it would be greatly appreciated.

Normally, it would only affect your aid next year. The exception is, I think, if your parents have been unemployed for more than 6 months.

You need to contact your schools about your situation. They may have some extra forms you’ll need to fill out. I think your official EFC will not change for this year, but maybe the school will be able to help in some way.

Some schools are more able to help with these situations, while others cannot.

Which schools did you apply to?

I got into University of Florida, and its the school im most likely to go because im from florida, so its in state plus I get 100% bright futures (for tuition, but i dont know how it really works out). I find out from UNC next weekend, and UVA april 1st, they are really good schools, but I do not think they will provide as much financial aid to make up for what UF will be. Last is U Pen, also in april, I think since they are Ivy, they might provide more financial aid, but my chances of getting in are kind of slim.

I thought the application process was difficult, but this is even worse. I have even struggle to get the money for the housing deposit of UF.

Thank you very much for the help

Since your parents’ income will be lowish this year, perhaps you should get a part-time job now to pay for some incidentals and then work more hours in the summer.
