I am considering dropping out of Honors Algebra 2

I am a sophomore in high school and I am taking Algebra 2 HN right now. Math is definitely not my best subject and along with this class I am also taking AP World, AP CS, and AP Human Geography. Because this is my first year taking APs, and I am taking three of them I tend to slack in math because I don’t like the class. My teacher is not thorough at teaching and she goes extremely fast, I would teach myself if I had the time and if I was motivated enough but I’m simply not at this point. It is almost the end of second quarter and I have an F in math. It makes me frustrated because I know I am a smart student because in my other classes I am willing to put the effort into it, but for Math I am so behind and my F might become permanent as soon as second quarter ends. First quarter I got a B- as my final grade so I am really considering switching out of Honors, but I want to know if that would makes colleges not consider me because I dropped an honors class. Most people in my grade are taking Pre-Calc HN and technically I am already a year behind. I really don’t know what I should do.

Where are you getting that you are a “year behind”? You are actually a year ahead of the standard math progression, which starts with Algebra 1 in 9th and Geometry for 10th graders. Anyhow, I would agree with dropping out of Honors since it’s very close to the end of the marking period and dropping down would be a way of preventing any further damage from taking place. If your first and second quarter grades are averaged together and you do end up receiving an F second quarter, you will walk out with a very low C or worse for your semester average.

Falling onto a progression of standard-level math classes will likely make it hard for you to take advanced math classes in the future (at my school, only students with Honors Algebra 2 can take Pre-Calculus, which is only offered at the Honors level, and that’s if they receive favorable teacher recommendations), but if you are failing Algebra 2, then I wouldn’t recommend taking any advanced math classes anyway. Even if you end up in standard Algebra 2, I suggest doing practice problems and asking the teacher for help in order to maximize your chances for success, seeing that Algebra 2 knowledge is built upon in later math classes.

Retake the first semester online and then take the second over the summer and whatever time you have left to finish it. You said you could teach yourself if you had enough time, so do it.

I would spend more time on Math and worry less about AP Human Geography. Why take two AP history classes?
Talk to your GC about the best plan for you.

You are most certainly not behind in math. You will end up taking Calc senior year which is still ahead.

I agree with previous poster about Human Geography. At least at my daughter’s school AP and honors are weighted the same.
