I am disabled. Are there special college programs to help students of disabled parent

Hello everyone. I have tried finding the answer to this question and honestly - I can't find a clear answer and am hoping somebody on this site might have helpful information. I have a nearly 19 yr old daughter who is attending a 2 yr community college then a 4 year college. I am disabled and cannot afford to help send her through college - are there any special funding programs to help my daughter? Her GPA in high school (just graduated this June 2014) was 3.89 and she is very motivated. I will be grateful for any advice you all might be able to offer. Thank you.

There are not any special funding programs that I am aware of that are just in general for students of a disabled parents. Do check fast web and any organizations for your specific disability. Ask specifically for college scholarships available. I have a son who is a cancer survivor, and we did find some awards specifically for such students. However, most such awards I have seen are small.

Also talk to her community college office financial aid office and ask. Also get info for those schools to which transfers are facilitated from that comm coll and scholarships that have been offered to transfers.

If she does well in community college, look for colleges that guarantee to meet full need or come close to it, and ask specifically if the policy also extends to transfer students. Have you run NPCs for some colleges that are possibilities for her bachelor’s degree? What are you expected to pay? More important than your disability would be your specific financial situation.

I just went to Google and typed “scholarships for children of disabled” and found several lists. There are definitely scholarships for children of MS sufferers, veterans, and police officers. There’s an organization called “Through the Looking Glass” that gives two $1000 scholarships per state. Maybe some of these are small but the small ones add up. I know in my state there are some scholarships for high performing community college students to attend state unis. I believe she can borrow $7500 per year as a junior and senior but it has to be paid back. As cptofthehouse above said, check with the financial aid office. Good luck to you and your daughter.
