Hey guys, I am going through a pretty large dilemma.

I am 25% Iranian, 25 pakistani, 25 indian, and 25 MOROCCAN.

I want to put down that I am "African-American." The culture that I grew up with is from Pakistan, however, I don't know what to do at all. I mean, let me explain. I was born in America, my parents are both citizens. My first language is Urdu, my second is English. I have documented proof about my mother being half moroccan, so I do not know what to do. My dream school is Rice, and I can play these hooks:

URM (potentially)
Geographic Diversity ( I am from NH)

You are not African American. African-American relates to people who have heritage from the black part of Africa. Morocco doesn’t meet that criteria.

From the Census: “Black or African American. A person having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as ‘Black, African Am., or Negro’, or provide written entries such as African American, Afro American, Kenyan, Nigerian, or Haitian.”

haha lol. I wished I didn’t make this thread. It makes me seem that I am not proud of my heritage. Let this thread die. It is shameful what college admissions make me do. I have to admit, although it is inconsequential regarding college admissions, that I am pompous about being from Pakistan, and that I have no intention of putting anything other than “Pakistani” on my college application.

No one is saying that you shouldn’t or aren’t proud of of your heritage (although I would have prefer no one has nuclear in their name), rather I think what people are trying to say is that colleges are trying to identify underrepresented minorities, and ergo are looking to people from Black Africa, not pakistan or iran. Best of luck.
