The reason I’m asking is because on the fafsa its asking me if i need to file for taxes. I work a typical min wage job but i started in november of 2015 and only made barely $1000 all together. So on fafsa will i select yes for saying I will have to file for taxes? or can I put no???
Did they withhold taxes from your paycheck? If so, you will want to file to get them back. If not, you can say “no”
^Federal and or state income taxes
On my checks it did say fica and state tax was taken out. So that means I have file? But I still haven’t gotten the tax forms
If state tax was taken out and it turns out that you don’t actually owe any state tax, you must file a tax return in order to get that money back. If by “tax forms” you mean a W-2 statement, you employer is required to provide that to you by the end of this month.
FICA is your social security contribution. That is not refunded to you. Just federal, and state taxes, if you paid more than you actually owe.
It is very easy to do a 1040EZ tax form online, once you have your W-2 form. Might take ten minutes.
You don’t have to file in your circumstance. But it would be wise to do so because
1-you will get a refund and you shouldn’t leave money owed to you
2- good habit to get used to it for when you have to and it is super easy now
3- you create a good official paperwork for your aid
so basically, I can put no on the fafsa where they ask if I will file for taxes right? what happens if i file for taxes but dont state that i will file?
