I know that my GPA is going to kill me, decreasing my chances about 30-50%, but i would really like to know if i actually have a chance at UMich. Should I apply for early decision? or Regular? please help !!!

*Side Note - To clarify what i said about me being an exchange student from korea, I was actually born in America but moved to korea when i was in 6th grade. I came back to America after 5 years to Michigan.

First of all, are you sure you’re in-state status? I think you’re out of state, I think you had to have been paying Michigan taxes for 4 years. But I think you’ll get in, good ACT and a lot of ECs. Low GPA, yeah, but your other stuff may make up for it. Ill say match

I think if his parents have worked for at least 3 years in michigan, he can claim in-state status. I’ll say 50/50 chance that you’ll get in. Seems like you have a rigorous courseload and a pretty active EC career but the gpa hurts. Apply early action.

I think people would be able to chance you better if we knew the name of your high school. I don’t think cousins will count as legacy will they (immediate family only?)? I don’t think U of M cares THAT much about EC’s in the first place, and I was told by an admissions officer that they mainly use EC’s to see your leadership and commitment (sports from 9-12 grade and earning a letter would be great).

Anyways, reach. 3.3 is probably too low without a big hook, especially if you don’t get counted as in-state like pistons said. Just apply early and see what happens if you really want to get in. Good luck!

I attend Forest Hills Public Schools, and my parents have been working and paying taxes here for about a year and a half now. Also, i used to live in Michigan since kindergarden - 3rd grade, and my parents were working at michigan during that time.

hey, how many kids get into U of M from your school each year? I think that thats a good indication of how well your school does and more specifically how much U of M likes your school in particular. I went to East Grand Rapids, and out of maybe 60 applicants this year, we have an almost 75 percent acceptance rate. That being said, I was in a similar situation like yours and was accepted after being deferred at first. If your school is like mine, then I wouldn’t be extremely worried then. I know Forest Hills is good, but I’m not all familiar with any of them (Northern, Eastern, Central)

From FHC there are on average 60 that get in each year. There were about 75 this year which will be incoming freshman. It’s one of the top five high schools in Michigan and possibly the top public, but EGR and FHC tend to trade that off every year or so. But your GPA is pretty low for an FHC grad yet you still stand a great chance. I think that is at or maybe just below average gpa graduation. I think last year FHC they had around 150 kids graduate with a gpa above 4.0 while the rest of the district had that much between northern and eastern.

With your sports and volunteering i think you stand a decent chance of getting in and at worst possibly a deferral. Since you graduate from a Michigan school i believe you will get automatic residency but call the residency office and ask. If they don;t give it to you i think you can appeal and they may be generous.

Also UM really likes FH and EGR students. Both schools hold statewide and national respect for the caliber of students and the high degree of academic difficulty especially for public schools which consistently send high numbers to UM, ND, Duke, JH, HYPSM, and etc.

Well I know you have to live in the state for one year in order to pay in-state tuition. You also have to declare domicile in the state. However I would say that your test scores are very very good. Your GPA might hurt you, but you took rigorous courses and your EC’s are excellent. I’d say you have a 50/50 chance. Make sure you rock the rest of the application and send in your mid year grades. Do not slack your senior year. Mid year grades can help you if you get deferred.

Samuelson777, i am truly glad that someone has actually been in the situation as i am in now. this year, Central sent 30-45 people to UMich, which is really good.

and blackpen, how will i be classified as OOS? is there any way i can be counted as in-state? my mom tells me that is you live in michigan as a resident for at least 6 months, you are counted as in-state. i know several families whose children have gone to UMich; they’ve been living in Michigan for less than 2 years each.

Why dont you call the admissions office and ask? No one here has the final say. It would suck if you got in and found out some time next year you’d be paying $40K, wouldn’t it? Call and ask

Michigan will likely send you a residency application and until you file that and prove that you are, in fact, a resident for their purposes, they will treat you as OOS.

Yeah, honestly I think 3.3 is way too low. It’s even below average for MSU! I know he’s taken very hard courses but I still think it’ll be a reach. Please correct me if I’m wrong though!

Probably, if your stats are related to the group that got accepted. Do you know the stats of the people accepted from FHC? Maybe all the people accepted were those with high, 3.7+ GPAs? Sorry, I honestly don’t know about any high school besides my own =/
