I am so baffled by my kid's SAT essay score. Can anyone assist?

He and I have both read the “understanding your essay score” section several times and, if anything, we are more confused.

Here are his scores:
6 - Reading
2 - Analysis
6 - Writing

Do you add them all together? If so, that’s 14 out of what?

Is this a middle-of-the-road score or a low one? (understanding that it honestly doesn’t count for much).

@SouthernHope max for each section is 8 see he has 14 out of 24

Each score is separate (out of 8) and cannot be compared to the old SAT Essay score. His score is 6/2/6. This means his reading and writing skills are fine but not stellar, but he really just summarized the provided essay and failed to analyze the rhetorical structures used or explain how they built a persuasive essay. 6 is an acceptable score indicating proficiency, but the 2 is problematic because from the outside we cannot determine whether he failed to do the analysis or did it, but did it badly. For strong students it seems to be that they just haven’t had any practice with this type of essay and so they default to a summary.
