I’m going into my senior year. I have no idea where I want to apply or go. I’m not even sure I want to go to school in America or if I should go to the UK and just study there.
How does anyone know where they want to go.
All I know is that I want a medium sized school, in a city but with a campus. Where they have greek life but it’s not the main source of socializing, and a school that doesn’t focus too much on test scores.
Does anyone know how to help me! My college advisory was the worst and was no help at all.
I tried that and didn’t help
You had a good start on a list back in April. Can you tell us what you thought of those schools?
They can still be considered part of the list, but I just don’t know how one decides where they want to go.
Have you been able to visit any?
1: calm down
2. Relax
3. breath
4. search colleges that you are interested
If you truly don’t know what to do, spend some time thinking about taking a Gap Year. Depending on your financial situation, you could travel, do volunteer work, or get a job. Many people find that taking a year off helps them think through what they’d like to do for a career and hence where they would like to attend college.
On your gap year make sure you get a job. That has a way of aligning your brain with the need for school.
I felt the same way when I was fist starting the college search. All my friends had lists and they all knew more or less where they were applying and I felt completely lost. I was at a friends house and she had a book that had about 300 or so schools in it, I thought that was a narrow enough list to start with and i planned to search through it and make a list from that. The book is called The Insiders Guide to the Colleges, and I don’t know where I would be with out it because not only does it talk about the school (like GPAs, SAT and ACT scores required, etc), it also gives insight into the student life there and the surrounding area around it and what students like and dislike about it, which was AWESOME. From there I figured that I wanted to stay in the north east area so that narrowed what states to look at. Then I just started looking and thought what size school I wanted to be in, what location would work best for me (city, rural, small town, etc) and all the details. So maybe check that book out, go to the book store and look at it before buying it to be sure you would utilize it. Also what I would do is make a rough list, you don’t even have to love any of the schools you put down, you might just put it down because its in a certain city or whatever, but tour! This will physically put you on the campus and you can see if you would imagine yourself there or not. Even if you hate it, knowing what you don’t want in a school is so helpful. Some great cities with campus-y schools are New Orleans, Boston, New York, LA, and so many more! Ask family, friends, counselors for suggestions too! There are great schools in UK as well, so maybe ask any college counselors at your school about any recommendations! However, the person who posted before is right, if you really have no idea what you want, there is nothing wrong with taking a gap year and figuring out where you would be happiest most. Take the time to try new things, go new places, and learn more about where you see yourself. Trust yourself with the decisions you are making. For every negative thing you think about a school there is a positive, so start searching for those positives and you will find yourself a very suitable list, no matter how long that takes you (but keep in mind application deadlines of course). Its all so stressful, and there are SO many schools to choose from, but experiment with different options and you’ll find where you fit. Message me with any more questions and I’d be more than happy to help!
