Hey everyone,
I just got my AP scores back & it was BAD.
Say I got a score of 1 on one of my exams.
Will it be okay if I take the same exam next year and get a 5?
I really thought I did decent & my scores were very dissapointing.

I don’t believe you have to send AP results to colleges, so you might resist the temptation. Far more important will be great SAT’s and SAT II’s (although great scores alone will not get you in to top LAC’s or ivies) and super grades, letters and compelling EC’s. That said, your APs don’t sound too promising if they have broader implications.

Dad2 is right. If, or how many, AP scores you send is at your disgression. If you received bad scores, don’t send them. As long as you did well on the AP courses themselves, a bad AP won’t matter much.

For your own sake though, I would not ignore the fact that you thought you did well. It’s one thing to score bad and know you did bad, it’s entirely different to think you know the material when you don’t.

Report on the common app only your best scores, but don’t send any official score reports until after you are admitted.

The likelihood of you scoring a 1 and then scoring a 5 is essentially zero.

In any case, though, there’s no need to report your scores.

Thank you everyone for your input!
I wasn’t sure if you had to send the scores, so it’s good to know that I don’t have to.
I received a B (my only B) first semester in the AP course & an A the second semester…so I did okay in the actual course.

Mgcsinc…the likelihood is low, but I’ll let you know what score I get.

Don’t bother retaking an AP. That is a pure waste of time. Don’t send that score and you’ll be fine.

Is there any chance you misbubbled at the beginning of the answer sheet so all your MC answers were off by one? Some of these standardized tests can be rescored by hand for a fee to see if that was the case (not sure about the APs). If you are an A student and got 4s and 5s in other AP exams (not sure if this is the case), then I’m wondering if a 1 is unusual unless you didn’t work on that course much.

DDHM-- I believe the deadline for manual re-scoring has passed, so OP has to live with his/her poor AP exam result.

DDHM: I believe the automatic test scoring software looks for this kind of common anomaly, but i could be wrong.

To OP: Don’t send that score anywhere. It won’t come up in discussion and you shouldn’t bring it up. If you simply punted on the exam, then chock it up to a bad day. Treat it like that bucket hat you bought a couple of summers ago, wore to a party, and took abuse from your friends for looking like a squid, and so you put it in the back of your closet never to see the light of day. If, on the other hand, you punted on the whole course and the exam is just the final chapter in a long semester of decay, then you essentially wasted a spot on your school schedule where you could have taken something you actually cared about, and you should try to never do that again.

If you don’t mind me asking: What subject was it?
