I am the Apple Campus Rep at Penn. Ask me any questions about getting a Mac here

how much is the black macbook (2 gig mem and 1600 harddrive) after the discount? i really wanted to get one about 2 or 3 months before starting at penn so i could get used to it, switching from a pc and all .. but from reading the previous replies, a hs senior can't get the discount..?

Yeah, you have to show proof of being a Penn student to get it.

Patience, grasshopper.

PS I am going to Beijing this summer. I'll be working as an intern at...Apple! (or ping guo dian nao gong si :D )

HAHA you're pretty gooddd!!! that's like a direct translation ... apple computer company.

oh well, saving money is more important. :) so its about 400 dollars off if we buy a mac that's originally 2000 dollars?

对了

Although the special discount is 暂时. While it is $2000 for mortals, it is $1800 for normal academic discount, but through a special limited-time Penn deal, it is $1600.

lol

I am so tempted to try for something similar (interning in China)

Hey Johnny,
I recently found out that Apple is delaying the launch of its new operating system until October. I need to buy a laptop before I come to Penn, so I can't wait until October to buy the Mac which will come pre-installed with Leopard. Should I buy a Mac in August and then install Leopard when it launches (how much should that cost?) Will there be improvement in hardware with the new mac that comes with leopard?

There is no point in waiting until October. There might be a hardware boost but then again there might not be. Apple doesn't tell us anything so all we can go on is past precedent and that is inconclusive.

I would get the Mac in August and just get 10.5 Leopard when it comes out. All new versions of Mac OS X have been $69 for students.

And remember Mac upgrades aren't like Windows upgrades where people have problems with unsupported hardware and missing drivers and all that stuff. Apple made all the computers so they can make sure all of them will work with the new OS. I've upgraded from 10.1 to 10.2 to 10.3 to 10.4 and then to an Intel 10.4 and I've never had any upgrade hiccups.

hey john,

how zhan shi is the offer? i wont get to campus until late august, and i really want to get a cheap computer. :)

tai zhan shi le, i'm afraid...

You'll probably miss the current discounts, but there is always a special "back to school" discount that will be announced in mid-summer.

Liang ge xingqi yiqian, wo didi ba wo de diannao yong huai le. Thank goodness I had a laptop stashed away somewhere.

你好在杀你弟弟。那是我自己做的。。。

Luckily? No, but I had better!

我是个穷学生,根本买不起两千块钱的电脑!

HAHAHAHA i love how this has turned into some chinese chat room.

oh well. yeah i agree with legendofmax - way too poor to afford a 2000 dollar computer - so i need the best discounts possible.

Johnny K, how are you?

I have another question for you actually. Do the Penn Macs have Microsoft Office on them. If not, what do most students use for like, a Word substitute. I hear buying Microsoft Office for a Mac can be pretty pricey.

Hi there. Neither the Macs nor the Windows PCs sold through Penn include MS Office. They all require you to buy it if you don't already have it.

But it is NOT pricey. It is only $99 when you buy it with the computers :)

So the answer is most Mac users don't use a Word substitute, we use Word. But there are certainly plenty of nice alternatives like ThinkFree, OpenOffice, and Apple's own iWork suite..

What's the current price tag of a mac book pro with discounts and whatnot? I'm thinking about getting one for my first year at penn.

At the moment it is $1599 but that is a special deal that is actually lower than the regular student discount price. It may be $1799 by the time you get here. But that is still less than the $1999 the mortals have to pay for it ;)

awesome $200 "extra" to spend on software...or clothes, who knows haha

Or beverages ;)

yeah...like...."milkshakes" and stuff... haha actually "beverages" were my first thought, but I felt too screwed up posting that as soon as it popped into my mind hahah
