I-Banking

I'm currently a freshman at Vanderbilt and I'm starting to see that the Ibanking recruiting isn't great. Does anybody have more information on this? Is it worth transferring to a comparable school, I have like a 3.7 and am an Econ major. My target is Goldman and I think I'm smart enough for it and have the charisma to close in an interview. Also would USC Marshall be better for this?

I’ve spoken with several current Vandy students who have obtained SA positions at MM/BB banks. If you maintain your 3.7 and network, you should be fine. Anyways, Vandy can’t be THAT bad if two of the most successful hedge fund managers in the world are alumni (John Arnold and Michael Burry).

What do those mean: SA and MM/BB bank?

SA - Summer analyst
Boutique bank - small regional bank
MM - Middle market bank (ie Harris Williams, William Blair, Houlihan Lokey, and many others)
BB - Bulge bracket bank (ie Goldman, JPMorgan, Merrill Lynch, Citi, Barclays, and several others)

What about top consulting firms like Bain and McKinsey ?

I heard that Goldman recruits exclusively from UVA’s business school, but I’m not sure if that’s true.

^That’s not true. I can assure they do not limit themselves to UVA although I’m almost certain UVA is recruited by GS.

I’m pretty sure Goldman recruits on Vanderbilt’s campus, i.e. they visit Vanderbilt and put on a presentation and do interviews.

Bain does this as well. A friend and classmate of mine (chemical engineer) received a job offer from Bain after attending their recruiting offerings.

^The founders of Bain and BCG are Vandy grads. They better recruit at Vandy! lol

I-Banking: We get recruiters from BAML and Goldman for SA IB, although most of the BBs recruit for other capital markets divisions.

Consulting: Bain recruits for SA (ACI) roles while both Bain, BCG and maybe McKinsey recruit fulltime. This is in addition to many other consulting firms that recruit for fulltime positions.
