Is Vandy a target school for IB and Consulting?

Does it have a good rep on the Street? I am looking to try Vandy out for either an MBA or an MA in Econ. I've heard that thier Econ department mingles with the Owen School. Is this true?

Are there any undergrad Econ majors in here?

Vanderbilt has a strong reputation for investment banking and consulting. Last semester, many of the firms held informational sessions in the Student Life Center and conducted interviews on-campus.

Some Investment Banks that Recruit on Campus --
Bank of America, Barclays, BearStearns, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Wachovia

Consulting --

Accenture, Bain & Company, Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte, IBM, McKinsey & Company, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Stockamp & Associates, Towers Perrin, etc.

Theres also an Investment Club, Undergraduate Business Society, and a Business Fraternity on campus.

And, yes there's an undergraduate economics program. There is just no undergraduate business program here.

excellent. i knew they had to recruit. i spoke to the grad econ department and they told me that many of thier student mingle with the Owen school by taking classes in finance, joining Owen clubs and organizations, etc.

Nymets11 is correct in telling you who interviews on campus, although I don't know if he is referring to undergraduate recruiting or recruiting for the graduate school programs about which you first asked. I might disagree about Vandy being a 'target' school for investment banking. The perception my son, an econ undergrad major, has is that in the world of investment banking, the ivies dominate. So while Vandy is respected and does get some action of its own, I believe that ivies and schools in close proximity to NYC, like NYU, might be more of a target for investment banking.

thanks snajean,

I figured that in the elitist world of NY IB that ivies would take all of the glory. But I am not looking to make it in the jungles of NYC. I am looking for more regional opportunities around Texas, Florida or California. I know of a guy who just graduated from Yale and did all of his internships in NY but chose a regional bank in Houston to settle down. Apparently, IB in NYC is not worth it unless you're looking for that super prestige that Manhattan offers. In my opinion its not worth it working for 80-100 hrs a week while only making 60k in a town where thats not that a lot money.

I hope Vandy can provide me with some good opportunities to take the degree around the country or perhaps around the world. What I look for in a school is recognition, good academics, and a solid alumni network.

RubenB84,

You sound like a mature student and I totally understand not wanting to be a part of the NYC investment banking scene. I agree that the hours don't justify the salary. But since you are looking to locate in one of three southern states there are other higher ranked MBA programs that might have more regional clout than Vanderbilt: Duke, UVA, Stanford, UNC Chapel Hill, UCLA, UC Berkley, and Texas-Austin. Business week ranks Emory and Georgia Tech lower, but they may have more recruitment from Florida.

Vanderbilt provides a wonderful undergraduate college experience. I'm just not sure it can prepare you for the graduate opportunities you want. Maybe someone from Owen will post.

Vandy has already offered some great things. Thier MA program in Economics is great and I wouldnt be in massive debt. I know Vandy is still a great enough school to land me an above average position in either banking or consulting. I have a lot of respect for the school and I know its on the rise with Gee running the show.

I would disagree with the above post and say that Vanderbilt is not a great school for investment banking if you want to be in a bulge bracket firm. If that's your thing, go to an Ivy, NYU, UVA, and the like. Economics, especially at Vanderbilt, doesn't prepare you for a career in finance. That being said, if you want to work in the south, Vanderbilt is not a bad choice. I would consider looking into UVA. I'm not sure whether they are far south enough to get recruiters from Texas or Florida, but they definitely get many more recruiters from New York. The undergraduate Economics department does not really mingle with Owen. I've never heard of an undergrad taking a course at Owen. It may be possible, but it is not frequent.

wow, so many mixed reviews. Actually commodore, I was told that the graduate econ department mingles with the Owen school. Most of the people in the Econ grad dept. go on to NGOs, The World Bank, IMF, which I wouldnt mind getting into either, but some do go off to work in private banks. I wouldnt say its rampant but I thought that Vandy was a target school for that kind of stuff.

What about consulting?

RubenB84,
Are you a high school student? Are you looking at Vanderbilt for a masters program or an undergraduate econ degree? I am a little confused about your interest in whether econ 'mingles' with Owen. Econ at Vanderbilt is offered through the College of Arts and Sciences or The Graduate School Program, while Owen Graduate School of Management is a completely separate college. I think you are wondering if you can interview as a masters student in Economics along with the MBA students in investment banking or consulting. For that information, I think you need to talk to the Career Development Center on campus, or the 2 different graduate schools.

Snajean, I am an undergrad at another institution. I mentioned in the original post that I was looking for a grad school to top my bachelors degree. I talked with the advisors in the GRAD department and they told me that many students take finance courses at the Owen school and some join clubs formed there too. That is all. I am sorry for the confusion.

I am pretty sure they also interview with the Owen students for placement in IB or consulting but I am still looking into that. The point is that I was wondering if Vandy would be a good choice.
I also have a shot at Hopkins, Emory and Rice.
