Hi so i recently got accepted to uc davis and uc san diego, but i barely got any money in financial aid. I got mostly loans and only 5k in grants. My parents make under 77k a year, but we have 140 k in assets. However, i was looking at the blue and gold scholarship for uc’s and it said that if we make 80,000, then we should get 12k in gift aid.
I’m really concerned about how I’m going to be able to afford going to college. I’m the oldest of my siblings and the first to go to college, so I’m not really sure how this works and I have two younger brothers after me and I don’t want to burden my parents with this financial burden.
Blue and Gold only guarantees that you receive the gift aid if you show financial need.
::::Demonstrate total family income below $80,000 and financial need, as determined for federal need-based aid programs:::
What was your FASFA EFC? This will determine if you are eligible for Federal grants and Cal grants which makes up the gift aid. Did you run the Net price calculators with your parents before applying?
If nothing else you can afford to start at a CCC.
5k is still nothing to shake a stick at. Since these are both Cali schools, I’m guessing you’re an in-state student and therefore paying cheaper tuition?
My advice to you is to do it. Those are great schools and you’ve already gone to the trouble of applying. BUT, make some major sacrifices in your personal life. (Read: get a job, live with roommates.) You might think that’ll damage your social life, but honestly, all your friends will be broke too. Hang out with classmates and coworkers all you like - just don’t go drinking all the time.
Instate COA for UC is 35k. A 5k grant does seem very low for a family earning in the 70s.
I wd conract the school’s FA office to ask how they arrived at the amt.
I agree. Contact the school. Did you make a mistake, perhaps an extra zero somewhere? Did they make a mistake?
