Im a sophomore here.... maybe premed... maybe not... have a good idea about life/classes here.... and ill give my honest opinion about anything you guys wanna ask (also, bear with me since ive got class and this is in my spare time)

Hope this helps.

ill check this thread every night at about this time for a week or so

how hard are the science courses?
2.How are the on campus activities? Would you describe the campus as “dead” or very active?
3.Would you describe Emory as a commuter campus?
4.Can you describe the difficulty of obtaining a research position? Would you say professors are booked all year or there are always positions available for undergraduates?

Is the Math department good or bad? why?

Being under 21, is the party scene mostly at the frats? do they have 18+ nights in Atlanta?

I know you’re most likely not gay, but how visible is the gay scene? are they kind of underground or are they very visible.

How often do you find yourself sitting in your dorm bored?

I could probably figure this out, but it seems easier to ask you, how cold does it get in the winter?

Are there a lot of southerners/ people with heavy accents?

How often does the normal non-frat guy party?

What do you do for fun other than parties?

How’s the food?

Wow, I spent about 45 minutes replying and I got logged out of the system and couldn’t post it.

Well, here I go again. Sorry if the responses aren’t as detailed, and the lack of capitalization. I’m kinda ****ed to be honest.

I took Bio 141/142 with Spell. Go to SI every week and the course will be manageable (albeit fairly difficult). Study habits are the key to this class (I got a B+ first semester and a C+ first semester, so yea, I shouldve studied). I didn’t read the book and I dont think it’s necessary (and neither does Spell from the impression I get). I also dont have an AP Bio background. nor chem or physics for that matter. Im taking Chem 141 with Mulford. From what I was told by friends, going to ChemMentors and doing the problems he suggests helps a ton on the tests. From what I gather, Chem is mroe about working out a bunch of practice problems and Bio is more about memorization. Im taking calc based physics, and while the subject is interesting, the professor isnt as good as the chem and bio ones. the class seems easier as well. but im more of a math person so maybe that’s why. if you’re premed, physics 141 will be plenty for the mcat. 151 is a bit faster and calc based of course. if you take 141, i heard good things about bing adn bad things about hte other guy (from my roommate).

campus activities seem happen fairly often. Not sure what type of activities youre referring to though… homecoming? sports watching? sorry, elaborate on that and ill try to help you out.

probably not a commuter school until youre a sophomore at least (freshmen arent allwoed cars and it’s just a hassle because so many freshmen are taking 8:30 classes). and the newer dorms are actually pretty nice (few, evans, longstreet).

I know people who had research positions as a freshmen. for the most part, people dont get them until sophomore year (maybe thats because they dont look until then). from what I can tell, emory tries to accomodate everybody.

Upper level math classes are good. Lower level ones are boring. If youre looking for a math major, a degree from here wont be a waste of time in terms of med school and will certainly open doors for grad school if you do that instead.

18 is old enough. I went clubbing more often than i went to frats

I have no idea, sorry. i dont know any gay people, but i know of several gay associations

not often enough lol. classes+hw+bball+frisbee+friends+tutoring=my life here

Im from a place where it snows 6+ months out of the year, so I dont feel the cold. I think it snows like once or thrice a year. it’s humid though, so other people say it’s a pretty cold place even though the thermometer doesnt get too low (still nothing compared to what im used to). last year, atlanta had that snowstorm and the school was shut down for a week or so. it’s very nice most of the time (summers get hot but youll be back home anyway) I picked emory because of the weather and big city btw.

Not really, probably just cafeteria people (and i wouldnt say “heavy”). and a few profs. When you go downtown, there’s a lot more.

i party like once every three weeks. my roommate goes out once a week. neither of us are in a frat. it’s your choice how often you party

sports and music. hawks/braves/falcons/georgia tech/ deadmau5/ any other artist who comes to atlanta. other people go to little five points and the museum of art as well.

it’s cafeteria food. but Cox is good imo. and emory village is good and atlanta has wonder ful restaurants

sorry, theses replies were a lot shorter than before. ill gladly elaborate on anything.

Nightclubs are 18+ to enter and 21+ to drink. I don’t have a fake, but I don’t really see the point in having one since alcohol is so expensive at clubs… So most people drink on campus. I guess you could have one depending on the club and how good the fake is.

Drinking is common. It’s college I guess.

Drugs- marijuana is pretty common. I dont think many people do the other stuff (at least out in the open). Except for maybe ecstasy

hello. i want to apply to both emory college and oxford. but im going to apply ed. i want to apply ed to emory and rd to oxford? is that possible? i would love to go to emory college if i got in ed but oxford, im not too sure about.
god. the whole emory/oxford thing is confusing.

so. is it possible. or not. the common app supplement is confusing.

I know it sounds awful to ask, but what were your stats like? I mean just GPA, SAT/ACT, race, legacy, and just if your ECs were great or decent or what, nothing detailed, don’t wanna nag. Emory’s my first choice by far (and my ED school), so I’m just trying to get a good feel of my chances.

I’ve grown up around Emory (my grandparents live around the corner, and I live in a town maybe an hour and a half away), so I know the area, and Emory’s a little out of the way (from downtown, and other places) so when you wanna’ go out, how do you get around? Because as you and I both know, Atlanta’s unlike other large cities in that it’s so spread out.

I couldn’t get in trouble for leaving my car at my grandparent’s house and taking transit to pick it up could I lol? I like to do things downtown, and play golf at a club in Tucker, so yeah.

Also, everyone complains that Emory has a lack of “student body unity” or whatever, and not that I really care, but would you say this is true?

Would you say that people who enjoy being social, and maybe drinking lightly, but not frat-style partying would have an easy time finding friends at Emory or not?

And lastly, what’s your favorite thing about Emory, and if there was one thing you could change about Emory, what would it be?

I realize many people usually self segregate, but do they self segregate by region? like “typically” are New Englanders and Southerners in the same group of friends?

Any idea why there are so many pre-meds?

If you wanted to go party, do frat parties let most people in?

Do Emory admissions/ emory scholars care about the writing section on the SAT?

I pay roughly 20k… family income is about 95k a year I think.

Self segregation is not be region…

Idk why there are so many premeds… Probably because a lot of it is what Emory’s known for. Premeds are always out of proportion at top schools because it’s what a lot of smart people want to do (money, prestige, difficulty, are all attractive to 20 year olds).
frats let freshmen in because they need to look “cool” to attract pledges… having girls in your group helps but its not necessary freshman year… by your second year, youll have friends in frats so youll get in
IDR the admission process too much but I doubt the writing section matters much unless you totally messed it up. I am pretty sure you can apply ED to emory adn RD to oxford but id call the admission office and ask to be certain. it’s been too long adn i never considered oxford so i dont remember.
yea campus is diverse. lots of black people, youll have no problem fitting in. not sure about bands now that I think about it (i have a friend who does music though and I can ask him and get back to you). i dont think the school is elitist… honestly, idk why people think that… i feel it’s more of an inferiority complex than anything else… or maybe ive just been lucky to meet the right people

My stats… 3.8/2290/Asian/ Not a legacy
EC’s were decent- team captain, volunteering, couple random state championships… that’s about it…

my hook was that i was from a vastly underrepresented part of the country… (think wyoming, idaho, montana, ndakota, sdakota region). I picked emory over more “prestigious (however the hell you define prestigious)” school because of location and weather.
I take marta usually. Sometimes I take a taxi when I am going out. usually marta.

i think your car idea works really well. i wish i had that option.

I think the type of people you described (light drinkers, non-frat style) are the predominant type here.

One thing I would change is the number of premeds… its kinda borign when everyones doing the same thing (im not premed. imade my choice a day after creating this thread lol)

My question is with respect to using Oxford at Emory as a way to get into Emory with lesser credentials. Can you comment on that? And can you apply to Emory AND Oxford at Emory?

Yea, you can definitely apply to both Oxford and Emory. I think if they both take you ED, then you’re obligated to go to Emory. (Once again, I’m a Sophomore now, so my memory about specifics is hazy).

Yes, people definitely do use Oxford as a way to get into Emory (I doubt many people who were accepted into both chose Oxford over Emory, but I don’t have actual numbers to back that up). But Oxford prepares you very well for Emory, job, and life. So I don’t see the problem to be honest.

In terms of other people’s perceptions… Many don’t like “backdoor students”. A few people are pretty rude about it.

This is now my perception.
The only tough part is trying to make newer friends and fitting in after two years at a different campus. You’ll friends will be mostly Oxford students. Oxford’s a lot smaller so you’ll know them better. And you’ll know some Emory College students from parties. But making BRAND NEW friends after switching is tough.

I wouldn’t have gone to Oxford. I couldn’t stand a small, rural place for another 2 years. (I grew up in one of those and I told myself never again).

Well, right now my biggest problem with Emory is the quality of the math/ CS department. Looking it up they’re not even ranked for those departments. I was planning on majoring in Math/CS joint major and then moving on to med school afterwards, but if plans change, it seems like a Math/CS degree from emory will get me nowhere, any advice on this?
