I can't believe I'm doing this.

Hi, I never thought I'd actually put up my info anywhere, but looking around this site has me very worried....and since this is what this entire section of forum is for, here we go....

I've applied to Harvard early action and am anxiously awaiting a very fateful email; I have perfect scores on my SATs (I and II), but clearly that doesn't weigh much in the Harvard application pool. I plan to major in something related to biology, probably molecular biology; I might double major also in math, but math would probably be a minor; I'm thinking also of minoring in music. I don't really know what rank I am at school, but our graduating class numbers 187 and I know I'm at least top ten. My GPA is a 4.2 or 4.3 something (although after this semester/year that's probably going down) and I'll have taken the following APs by the time I graduate:
10th grade: European History (4), Calculus BC (5, also on AB subscore)
11th grade: Spanish IV (4), Statistics (5), English Language (5), Biology (5)
12th grade: English Literature, Chemistry, Physics, Spanish Literature
(Total=10, and I'm not sure how many APs are offered - it was about 15 2 years ago, but I'm sure the number has gone up)
Additionally, I took a class at a nearby college last year (Multivariable Calculus - made an A) and am taking another one presently (Intro. to Discrete Structures), which I'm fairly sure to get an A in. I also plan to take another one next semester, but which class depends on the new class schedule.
I'm president of Mu Alpha Theta and Science Olympiad at my school and national vice-president of Mu Alpha Theta. I participate in National Honor Society, Concert Choir, and Saturday peer tutoring (sometimes....); one of my classes requires classification as Talented in Music to attend. I worked as an intern in a research laboratory this past summer - and although I did do a lot of mixing stock solutions, running gels, etc., I had my own project that I have a poster on (and which was sent to Harvard as supplementary material - I also sent them a CD with 2 vocal pieces). I sing and play the piano like every Chinese girl in the country, although I hope I do so better than most. I'm National Merit Semi-Finalist, but am pretty certain I'll be a Finalist....I'm trying not to sound conceited! I'm sorry if I come off that way....Well, anyway, I'm tired of putting up information about me. My interview is tomorrow, or possibly the day after (my interviewer hasn't gotten back to me on that yet), and I'm a bit worried about that too.

I know I don't compare to a lot of people who have posted on here....but I hope I have at least a chance....I'm going to apply to Yale and Princeton no matter what happens with Harvard, but my other choices are MIT, Stanford, UPenn, Duke, WashU, and Tulane (local - safety).

Thanks to everyone who actually bothers to read all of that!!

morwen

you have a great chance and you know it...stop fretting over it!

Morwen,
best wishes on your interview - hope it goes/went great! Is this your first interview?

Yes....Although now I am a bit more worried, because my interviewer still hasn't contacted me about an interview she originally suggested for today....She did say she was going to be out of town for a few days, but if she suggested today, she should be back by now. So I'm not really sure how that's going.

morwen, I really don't think you have a good shot at any school with your perfect SAT scores... There are a far more students who have way lower scores than that, so you are at a disadvantage. Pull down your SAT scores, then I think you'll have a great shot at ANY college! Good Luck!

Best wishes,

Beramod

I don't think you need to worry. She's probably out of town! Funny story to help pass the time - my son's last interview called him to set up a time... twice. First time he was in class - and had forgotton to turn his phone off. It rang... and the teacher cofiscated it. The second time he called, the phone was sitting the principal's desk drawer. When my son finally got the phone back, he spilled pepsi on it in the car, totally discharging the battery. Then he left the battery part of the phone in the drama prop room. So, two weeks later, he returned the interviewer's call, and finally completed his interview last week. Luckilly, it was his last one, so he wasn't too put off by all the nonsense.

If you have your interview e-mail, you could drop her a note if you don't hear from her within a week or so. Many alumni interviews are very busy people, and you should not take if personally if the schedule is a little screwed up.

I'm glad that nobody has flamed you for this. You seem like a genuine person. Usually people go crazy on this site if someone with nearly perfect stats acts worried or nervous about their chances. Good luck!

Hey Cindy! heh, nice seeing you here. Welcome to the crazy world of CC.
Don't worry too much... I'm sure you'll do fine.

Anyway, good luck!

~Alice

Stop freaking out. Everyone knows ur going to Harvard. You need to get out more. Get wasted. LOL.

Who's Cindy? I'm confused. Nevermind. Disregard the last post. I'm very confused.

What school in New Orleans offers all of that?

oh sorry- morwen= Cindy, and I know her from math tournaments. :-P

Cindy, stop worrying! AND WELCOME TO CC! MWAUAHAHAHA! addiction starts NOW. ::smile:: :)

you mean addiction started a couple days ago, and late at night....ahh! hi alice! tell me you're not an addict too....and geraldpoopy - i agree with your point on getting wasted. maybe i'll try it on new year's eve....or sometime before the end of senior year....

no cindy you won't..!!!

have fun at your interview...you'll be fine..!!!

CINDY!!!

here's my advice: Whatever you do don't apply to Stanford! The only people that go there are Harvard rejects (and you don't want to be anything LESS than perfect!)

Kidding, kidding! (that is if I get deferred (LOL...right...)..in which case we'll have another wrestling match...grrr....)

seriously, what school in new orleans offers all of that?

i read from somewhere that harvard uses a 1-5 scale (where 1 is the highest) to rate personal, academic, and extracurricular factors while princeton uses i think the 1-6 scale (or it may be 1-9), where 1 is also the highest.

an academic rating of one (which is rarely awarded) describes an applicant who achieved a 1500 or greater on the SAT, who is ranked #1 or 2 in the class, who has taken the most rigorous courseload, and who achieved scores of 800 on three SAT IIs, and scores of 5 on 5 or more AP exams (and/or, if applicable, the highest scores on at least 3 IB HL level exams). an extracurricular rating of one requires national recognition in something such as siemens, intel and the like. a personal rating of one is based on the student's contributions to the community and on the teacher recommendations (whether it says "best in teaching career" or best in so so years). if you care to average the academic, extracurricular and personal ratings, most admitted students will land a 2...in borderline cases even a 3. note that membership to many different clubs will get an applicant only a 4 but state or local recognition (depending on how prestigious it is), will get him/her a 2 or 3. being school president is a 3, which is the equivalent to being president of three clubs.

your ratings:
academic rating: 2 (could be a 1 depending on whether taking 15 AP classes is actually doable at your school, since your school offers 15 and you will have taken 10 of them; also depends on what your recommenders will say about you)
extracurricular rating: 2; national VP of mu alpha theta, emphasize this credential
personal rating: very little or no basis for judgment

what ratings would you assign yourself, since you know yourself better than anyone else does?

i'm inclined to say Yes to harvard based on the given info, if your essays and teacher recs are a stand out. your teacher recs must give anecdotal evidence.

You seem like a great, humble gal! I hope that you do get accepted into Harvard. I am 90% sure, but my opinion doesn't matter, as I am not the adcom ;)
