I can't decide! MIT or UC Riverside?

Just kidding. :)

BUT I do have a question on college apps.

Here’s what I was planning on applying to:

Stanford (SCEA) ← I have a chance. Small shot…

Columbia Fu SEAS ← Nice college. If I get in to here and not Stanford…

UC Berkeley ← I estimate like 60% chance of me ending up here.

Cornell ← If I don’t get into Stanford/UCB/Columbia and I get into Cornell, maybe I’ll go there.

Carnegie Mellon ← Incase I don’t get into UCB, Stanford, Cornell, and Columbia.

UIUC ← Incase I don’t get into even CMU.

MIT ← incase they get drunk and accept me on accident

Princeton ← read above
9, 10, 11. UCs ← Hey, free to apply to 4 UCs. Might as well.

Think maybe that’s too much? Maybe I shouldn’t apply to Princeton? More reach schools? More safety schools?

Harvey Mudd might be a small reach/match, but otherwise, the UCs are good enough for safeties

Oh yeah, I should apply to Harvey Mudd too.

Well i mean would you go to princeton over stanford and such if you got in? If so you should apply... dont just waste apps because it would be cool to get into a top ivy.

Way too optimistic

Well I might get into Princeton and not Stanford. There's a chance of that happening.

And I don't see how I'm being optimistic.

how about caltech?

what major(s)?

EECS or ECE.

need some more matches/safeties.

Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern and USC are good starts.

here is the list that i am going to apply to (i want to do double major electrical engineering/physics)

reach - caltech, cornell, carnegie mellon, rice
matches - michigan, illinois
safety - purdue

flippy - i think that you need 1 safety, and a few matches.

You need more safeties and matches, definitely. Apply to some schools that have a higher acceptance rate, because most of the schools on your list are very very selective.

flippy - apply to you state school also, whatever state you are in

Yeah, UCs are my safeties. I'm like 99% sure I'll get into UCSD, and I'm pretty confident about UIUC.

if you are from california, dont apply to UIUC. the in state tuition is alot cheaper if you apply to UCs, and also application process is alot easier.

btw flippy post your stats, so we can help you judge which school is match, reach, safety

Alright it'll look like this:

GPA: 4.4 W, 3.9 UW. (Rank 5 to 10/744)
UCGPA: 4.2 (8 semester of AP/H cap) or 4.6 without the cap
SAT: 2300s
SATII: Math2c - 800. BioM - 760. Physics - 800.
14 AP classes taken. Mostly 5's, couple 4's.

ECs: Pretty average on this board. Few clubs, few leadership, research paper (hopefully), volunteer work at a hospital, etc.

Essays: no idea, but they'll probably be fine.

if you stats will be like that, then i suggest you apply to the following:

early action - stanford
reach - columbia, MIT, princeton
match - berkeley, cornell, carnegie mellon, UCLA
safeties - UCSD, UCI, UCD

Duuuuuuuuude...go to MIT!

What kind of lame question is that?

MIT is obviously a better school.

UCR is good too, but not as good as MIT.

I mean, if you really can't handle MIT, and you got a full-ride to UCR or something.

But UCR is a really sucky back-up for MIT.

Why didn't you apply to more schools in between?

um, you need more match schools. i would say 1-8 are reach schools. theres a very good chance ( i would say 70%) that you'll be going to a UC if those are the only schools you're applying to. Seriously, kids at my school did the same last year...they're all (with the exception of one) are going to a UC

I want to go to a UC. Berkeley EECS?

And I always considered UIUC to be more of a safe match for me. I mean, I know their engineering must be selective, but that school has a 75% accept rate...

Even CMU should be no problem. I don't know what makes you think I have a 30% chance of getting into UCB, CMU, and UIUC.

anonamous - That's a good breakdown, but you don't think I should apply to UIUC?
