I can't even think of possible majors!!

I am a sophomore in high school and I really have little idea of what I want to eventually major in in college. I really enjoy art and music. I love to draw and even though I have never taken art lessons I have a sort of natural talent that I have developed. I am not Michelangelo, but I can draw something that is pleasing to the eye. I also love music. I am teaching myself to play the piano and I love to sing. Despite this, I love math and science too! I love learning how the world works. I took physics last year and I really enjoyed it! I have also taken biology every year of middle school and I love cell biology and genetics. I am not really a math person when it comes to just doing math, but I can apply math like in physics. I'm bilingual and pick languages up pretty fast too. I like learning about different cultures and how other people lived both now and long ago. I also love history! I can sit down and read a whole book on the French Revolution or World history or the Paleolithic Age. I know that history can help people in the present and I want to make some sort of difference in the world. I don't want to be a greedy businessman who only thinks about his lifetime, but I want to deal with the big picture. I honestly don't know what major I could possibly fit into. I have thought of Architecture, since it blends art and science in a way or environmental studies, but I want to know if there is anything else.I really want to make a difference in the world in an environmental way. Now that Green architecture is becoming popular it attracts me even more. The money the major will get me in the future is not an issue for me right now. I just want to get an idea of my options and lay everything out. My parents urge me to major in business administration. They say that it will open up a lot of doors for me and that it will leave give me a lot of job security (they both studied that). I know they are 100% right, but I just feel that majoring in that wouldn't give me personal satisfaction. In the end I know I can't get everything, but I don't want to be unhappy with my decisions in the future. Any suggestions??

sorry to tell you this, but your parents are wrong. Business administration CAN help you get jobs, but it’s not a guarantee and it does NOT give you job security. The best jobs that I know that have job security are either the federal government or teaching since you sign a contract for a year usually but in the school district in my city, its for 2 years.

You don’t have to declare a major until your sophomore year of college. Honestly, you don’t need to figure it all out right now.

Business Administration may have worked with your parents, but it’s not really a lucrative thing to do at the moment. If you have the talent for mathematics, physics, or some form of science (besides Biology or Chemistry) you can get a job pretty easily. If you want to go into business, I’d say you’re better suited to double major in math and economics. 99% of my friends are some type of science or engineering major, but I’d say they enjoy what they do.

Don’t try and figure it all out now, your “calling” will come eventually. Most people end up switching their majors three times anyway. Funnily enough I went Physics to Math and then now I want to double major in Applied Math & Physics. :stuck_out_tongue:

Good luck!

totally agree with caldud, i mean mabye ur parents can help u with connections, but even if that is the case, you can major in anything. I would say the same, you have until your sophomore year to decide. I hate the whole “you have to major in business to get ahead” the only thing that business majors at my school learn are stats and some business vocabulary. The “real problem solving” doesn’t start until you get your MBA.

Also, try, try, try to involve yourself in all sorts of extracurriculars and internships - they will give you a better idea of what you like, and just as importantly, what you don’t like.
