I could use a chance (take that back, I could use some honest advice?)

I swore for many months that I would not ask this, but…well, here I am. I would love, love, love it for anybody to take a shot at chancing me. Applications are in, but I could sure use some consoling.

GPA: 4.15 (I’m not sure if my school weights it or not, or how weighting is done)

Was also editor of our campus literature magazine for the past two years and we recently won second place with special merit in the North American Scholastic Press Association contest.

My hope is that my essay topic will shine some light on my otherwise less-than nationally acclaimed extracurricular record. I wrote about how my mother going back to school first caused me to feel so neglected that I gave up on school in my elementary years, to then go on to earn a scholarship to the best boarding school in state (since we could not afford it without the offered money).

My biggest concern is my math SAT score. My word, I have not seen much worse than that in a chance thread. I always did very well in my math classes in school.

Thoughts, questions?

I know you want assurance and everything but of course we can’t tell you if you’ll get in. I think you have a good chance though (your stats and accomplishments are very impressive!) and if it makes you feel any better, I don’t think Barnard considers math as important as other subjects. I’m not a big math fan either so this is another reason I love Barnard :)

good luck! In a few weeks we’ll all know!

Thank you, thank you lorrainedelis!

I hope you are right about the math thing, it’s good to know I’m quite possibly not the only one with scary scores in that area.

Oh Barnard…but yes, we can really only wait. Do you know when results are supposed to come out? Early April-ish?

Best of luck to you on you own application, in any case!

Women often discover a love (or at least a liking) for math in college. Barnard may overlook a low math score as you will take a semester of math when you get there.

I don’t remember what my d’s exact scores were when she applied back in 2005, but I am pretty sure her math scores were a bit lower than her verbal. She began college at Barnard thrilled with the notion that she would only have to take one math class EVER, and then ended up a neuroscience major who took extra semesters of calculus and statistics.
My point is that, yes, Barnard is more well-known for writing/humanities, but the sciences and math are there to be explored…

Nobody here can tell you your “chances”, as you know, but personally I find your background to be very interesting!

And you will get your admission decision, if the past 5-6 years’ pattern holds true, sometime during the last week of March.

Best to you! Hang in there…the wait is very nearly over!!

Everyone finds out on April 1 I believe :slight_smile: So a few more weeks. Thanks! Best of luck to you too!

Big shoat out to all three of you: YOU ROCK! Thank you!

This chance thread has served its purpose, as far as I am concerned, and this positive feedback has done me a wonder of good. I feel a lot better.

@lorrainedelis
I’m sure plenty of people have brought this up, but April 1st feels like a fairly sketchy day to be getting an admittance decision on. :P

Again, you should receive your admission decision some time the last week of March (not April). The admissions website says “late March”, and in the past Barnard students have received their decision about one week prior to the March 31 BIG DATE.

The most recent available common data set (2008-2009) for Barnard shows 2% of its students as having SAT math scores in the 400-499 range. That would be roughly 11 students in the freshman class. In past years the figures were somewhat lower.

Basically that says – it is not impossible, but obviously that score doesn’t help. All you can do at this point is wait and hope that your strengths are enough for the ad com to overlook your math score. The fact that you have good grades in math at well-regarded private prep school may be something they would consider – maybe your problem is with the timed format of the test.

@churchmusicmom

Does this mean we can rightly expect to get notice around March 24 or 25 (about a week prior to March 31st) or that March 31st is the ‘big date’ when most are notified?

@calmom

The timed format and ‘brain teaser’ style of standardized math is definately the thing that I have most trouble working out. Maybe Barnard will take my grades and school into account, but yes, your data from two years ago shows that it will be pretty lucky for me to get accepted based on my score, even if the percentage has gone up from previous years.
I do remember a Barnard admin emphasizing the application review process, and how they view SAT’s last, and that on collegeboard the SAT’s are listed in the ‘Important’ category where many comparable schools list it in the ‘Very important’ category. Both suggested, to me, that the administration take strong measures to look at you as a person, in context, ect, before taking in the cold numbers. I’ve heard that essays and all other writing that go along with your application are very important and the essay is considered very, very important to Barnard. This gives me hope, even if that sounds a bit endearing or naive.

Yes, Meaderer, I would not be at all surprised if you all start hearing around the 24th or 25th. International applicants usually hear first, as they get e-mails. All others will get either an Express Mail envelope (the proverbial “big envelope”) or a regular mail one (the less-well-received small envelope). Unfortunately, these will not all arrive on the same day, so some on here will know (one way or another) up to several days before others. It stinks, but that’s the way Barnard has done it for at least the past 6 years.

churchmusicmom: so we can’t check online? the first way we know is from the letter? I’ve only found out online from other schools (letters have come later and I never got an email, i had to check myself or i wouldn’t have found out) so I’m surprised if this is the case…ah I’m so nervous! 20 (ish) days til we know!

Meanderer – I think at this point all you can do is wait – you’ve given it your best shot and there’s nothing more you can do. The stats on the CDS show that it’s not impossible to get admitted to Barnard with a 490 on math – so at least you can be assured that the ad com is giving you serious consideration and is not going to reject you solely on that basis. But my sense is that it is a very competitive year for admissions. You’ll know one way or another in three weeks.

@churchmusicmom

I’ve been wondering the same thing as lorrainedelis. Do you know if Barnard posts replys online?

@lorrainedelis

Do you have an address and/or login to check to financial status of your documents, because I have not and it makes me a bit nervous. I’ve emailed but…they’re really busy over there.

@Meanderer/lorrainedelis - Barnard does not post any admissions replies online. You will just have to try and sit it out and wait for the mail. Good luck to both of you!

Trapeze37 is correct. Unless Barnard has changed things (and I think they will let you know if they have), notification is by mail, not online (except for internationals). Unfortunately, that does mean that some here will know their admission results as much as several days before others. But it’s not long now, one way or another!

@trapeze37 and churchmusicmom

Well that sure clears things up. I had no idea we would be waiting for physical notices. Thanks, both of you!

Would either of you know of how to check the finanical status of your application, or if it is even an option for Barnard?

@meanderer - what do you mean, financial status? I have the pw and username to get to the snowbird thing that tells you when they received everything (i.e. transcripts, SAT scores, etc) but I don’t know what you mean by financial status

@trapeze37 - thanks! I guess we will just have to wait it out :slight_smile: only a little longer, but it seems like forever!

@lorrainedelis

Ahahah, you poasted just one minute after I did!! Sorry, its getting late and I’m starting to find all sorts of things extremely amusing.

Most of my other colleges have given me financal log ins or pages within the application monitoring website to check their received files so you can make sure they have everything before major deadlines and such. Barnards log in is basically just one page and I was getting nervous that…well…that they didn’t need my financial information anymore and that other applicants had theirs already.

But it sounds like this is not the case!! If you don’t have one either, I’m guessing its normal.

Oh man…I’ve never hated March or midterms with such a fiery passion. I want letters!

haha I found that amusing too, don’t worry :)

I don’t know about anything financial (all the $ I’ve dealt with is the SAT score and application fee…are you talking about the FAFSA or something? financial aid??) but for application status, that’s all I’ve been checking!

Yikes I’m sorry you have midterms! how is that possible though? midterms for us were back in December and seniors don’t even have to take them! Good luck! :slight_smile: Haha I want letters too!! I’m so nervous!

Good luck on your midterms and college stuff! I can’t wait to know! (and pleeeeaaase let it be good news!)
