I live in virginia and really think that the SOLs are ineffective. I was wondering what type of standardized testing other states have. How do they work? What about other countries?

Massachusetts has the MCAS tests, which are absurdly easy and taken in the tenth grade. There are Math, English, Science, and--I believe--US History sections now. I had to take Math, English, and Science, but Science didn't count.

You have to pass it to graduate, but you have like 5 semesters to pass it, and it's not terribly difficult to begin with, so it's really just a waste.

wow, SOL the best name for a standardized test ever!

I love the EOC's I have to take, easy 96 or so that counts for 25% of our total grade.

hahahaha i cant believe they call their state tests SOL. Ours are called CIM...no cool acronym there.

In South Dakota we have the STEP tests. They are insanely easy, with questions like, 'What is the meaning of difficult?' I wish the ACT was just like the STEP.

In GA, Elementary school has ITBS, and random middle/high school classes have End Of Course Tests (EOCT). They're state mandated (read absurdly easy). There is also CRCT which is phasing out ITBS. We have Georgia High School Graduation Tests in 4 subjects (Reading, Math, Social Studies, Science: sample math: what form is a baseball?) that we take in 11th grade because of simplicity as well as Writing Competency Tests in 8th and 11th grade.

In California, we have:
STAR
CAHSEE
CST
CAT6......

New York:
Elementary school: ITBS (every year), ELA, NYS Science, Social Studies, and Math tests

High School: Regents exams in about every course. I hate them!

Rhode Island has the stupid NECAPs (pronounced "knee-caps", so when I talked about those darned things on the bus, the person next to me looked at my knee-caps and said, "why, what's wrong with them?), Stanford 9s.

Aaaaannnddd to add to that, our district has GSE's or something like that, which are quarterly assessments for those in geometry and sophomore english classes.

I also think that these tests are highly ineffective because they don't really show the true intellect of the schools, because I know that a lot of people don't take these things seriously. :-P

Good thing seniors are exempt from state testing here in CA. ;)

^YUS.

I'm so excited. We have no school for a week...it's like a second spring break. ^^

In Pennsylvania there were PSSA exams. I think they're given in 5th, 8th, and 11th grades. I only remember having to do writing, reading, and math sections. Heh, I remember I almost got a detention during the exams since I finished something like 45 minutes early on a section and took out my other books to do homework. They wouldn't let me turn the test in early to work on other things, so I just had to sit there staring at the wall. :(

I hate that! Lucky for me in 7th grade I was out the whole week they administered the TCAP's with appendicitis and got to make them all up at my own pace the next week, totally worth it :P

Ours are called CIM. I still have not passed them :), lol. Its weird on my transcript all A's 7 ap's, and then it says i have not passed my states standards which some really dumb people in my school have passed

we have CATS in Kentucky.. super easy. we also have writing portfolios, which are annoying.

woot woot another kentucky resident!

CA's pretty big on standardized tests as someone earlier mentioned.

They all are pretty easy tests though, and our school's science department inflates our grades if we do well on the STAR.

We also have district-made midterms and finals (always pathetic) in addition to CST, STAR, and CAHSEE's.

To date, I have missed one SOL question on the 8+ exams I've taken, and it's not even as though I study for them. It disturbs me to think that students at my school actually fail the things.
