I did terrible my freshman year... Please help. Will I be able to raise my grades?

When I still lived in Seattle, I had a GPA of 3.9. I was on top of my game. I was in cross country, and I joined no clubs. I attempted too, but I was too distracted by sports and homework. It was a S.T.E.M. school. I went there for two semesters, and then I moved all the way to South Carolina. To find out the grading scale is a lot different here than there. The grading system I believe in Washington is an A is 90-100. A B is 80-90. And so on. Here in South Carolina, an A is 93-100. A B is 83-92. I usually get 96, 98, sometimes even 85's. But I always raised them up. I guess I got into a depression because I moved away from all my family and friends I didn't really care about my grades, but I can only blame myself for that. The school was slightly harder because I was put into classes I never took before, and they couldn't do anything about it, because my school offered different classes, that wasn't availiable where I was attending. Sorry for dragging this out for so long. Well I ended my freshman year with a 3.285 unweighted. (Can someone tell me what that means and what weighted GPA is?) and a SC UGP GPA of 3.875. I have no idea what that is at all, so if someone can explain that to me as well, thank you. I'm just really worried. I'm worried I won't be able to raise it up. I work really hard, and I admit I slacked off, which I shouldn't have and now I realize it a lot. I ranked 84 out of 719. I don't know whether that's important or not. I did do swimming this year also. I did take ONE honors class and that was engineering now that I remember, but I did not take any AP classes. Do you think I should apply for some next year? I will work toward my goal no matter what, and right now it's to raise my poor GPA. I passed all my classes. I don't know if you need my schedule and grades but here's what it is.
English 1CP: 94
Physical Science CP: 91
Global Studies 1: 91

Can you recommend me any classes that you think will be good? I really want to be in the medical field so any with health would be fine. Please I really need some help. I wish I talked to my counselor about this, and I know I did terrible, but I really am determined.
Sorry this was so long.

Your grades are fine, although i wouldn’t jump into APs unless you’ve taken Honors classes before (MANY) and your rank is low because you are taking regular classes and they aren’t weighted

To answer your question regarding the distinction between your unweighted and weighted GPA, your weighted GPA includes the extra grade “point” you get for taking AP or honors courses. While, your unweighted GPA doesn’t include the additional points.

Quite frankly, your GPA is more than sufficient. However, you may to venture a few honors or AP courses.

Finally, a normal person lol. You’re fine. Just slowly work your way up to Honors courses and then try a few AP classes. I know how you feel, trust me. Just keep on trying YOUR best and the results will follow.

The SC UGP gpa is a weighted gpa using SC’s grading scale, which weighs honors and AP classes higher. You should find the scale somewhere in your student handbook. The way SC does the GPA makes it extremely easy to raise your weighted GPA, so your class rank can always shoot up since it’s based off of the weighted GPA. For example, a 100 in a CP class is 4.375, 100 in honors is 4.875, and 100 in AP/Dual is 5.875. Start out with honors classes first, but you’re in mostly CP classes right now, while most students enter the honors system in their freshman year. Was this because of the scheduling problems? Ask your current teachers if they’ll recommend you to go on to the honors classes, but only if you feel like you’re ready for them. But you seem bright and they’re very doable if you just work hard. Take a few APs if you’d like, but you may want to wait until junior year for them. Good luck!

*I messed up on the gpa thing. 100 in CP is 4.875, 100 in honors is 5.375, 100 in AP/Dual is 5.875.

A lot of colleges like to see an “upward trend” if you are inconsistent with your grades throughout high school. Don’t worry too much, though! If you are determined and have the mindset, definitely go for the APs! You can always drop them if you find them to be too difficult. In response to the medical aspect of your question: AP Bio is obviously a beneficial course for this field, but it requires a lot of work. AP Human Geo. and AP Environmental Science were two APs I took freshman year that I thought were very easy; though not directly related to med., they should still help to boost your GPA (and HPA) and will show colleges you can balance an advanced workload.
