I do a lot of college research and one thing that I have noticed is that college stats and students experiences are a lot different. The top school I want to get into is UCSD and I constantly browse Reddit threads and college forums. But all the post I ever see are people being waitlisted or just flat out denied when they have outstanding stats. Like a student can be waitlisted for having a 4.6 GPA with a 1530 SAT while college stat websites say their average GPA is 4 and SAT is 1350. Are these websites really out of date or are these students the few exceptions that actually post on forums?
Colleges look at applicants holistically, and sometimes can seem to be extremely random. In terms of UCSD and other UC’s it’s relatively more difficult to apply as an in-state applicant as the acceptance rate is lower for them. Depending on the UC, it’s slightly easier to be an out of state applicant which may explain why some students with high stats were rejected despite the lower stats presented on websites. That being said, the competition grows every year, so loads of students with amazing stats have been rejected from schools that would have been considered ‘safety’ schools. As long as you do your best and work hard, you’ll be fine no matter which college you go to! Good luck

Much of the admission process varries from major to major especially for UC engineering/compsci. Many of the 4.5+ gpa and 1500+ SAT rejects are those (like myself and many of my friends) who applied for cs/engineering and refused, out of vanity, to list any uncapped secondary major choices. So, learn from our mistakes. Know where you stand relative to other applicants and research whether the school you apply to accepts by major or by college (ie college of engineering vs Letters and Science), bc it makes a HUGE difference. Also, for the love of god, DONT APPLY FOR CS (unless you have a near perfect uw gpa and a 1450+ sat or are ok with settling for san jose state or ucsc)
