Will I get into UCSD?

I am high school senior with 1360 SAT and 3.8 UC GPA. I was rejected from SDSU. I applied for psychology. I’m pretty sure that I’ll get rejected but I’m just trying to figure out my odds.

Cal states only use your eligibility index to rank you within your major, so its very straightforward. UC’s take into account for more than just stats, yes they are a vital part, but EC and the PI questions are also highly influential with your admission decision. Also, your stats are not even bad; I’ve seen people with much lower stats get in. So keep your hopes because you never know!

UCSD will be a tough admit than SDSU but UCSD is not just about stats. Here is some UC statistical data to help gauge your chances. Hopefully you have some solid Match and Safety schools on your list.

2018 Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCSD: 34%

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCSD: 4.16

2018 Data:
25th - 75th percentiles for SAT:

UCSD: 1300-1520

Application review criteria:

  • SAN DIEGO
    *
  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores

  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, State residency, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience

  • Note: High school course pattern, GPA, essay and test scores most important. Admission for out-of-state applicants more selective than for residents.

The campus does not admit students on the basis of academic major or choice of UC San Diego undergraduate college. Alternate majors are considered. Also note: Capped majors require additional pre-req courses
and specific GPA to be able to qualify to if changing majors.

@Gumbymom @Aduffey414 Would you say because State acceptances use eligability index for decisions that it would be harder to get into SDSU than UCSD? Since UCSD looks at so much more I would assume it would be easier.

@college2019bound: I edited my original post since I meant to say that UCSD will be a tough admit. In general it would be easier to get in SDSU vs. UCSD, but with the addition of personal insight essays and EC’s in the UC application and a compelling reason for lower than average grades/test scores could help an applicant at a UC over a CSU which strictly goes by stats.

For 2018 stats
SDSU’s average CSU GPA was 3.93
UCSD’s average CSU GPA was 4.16

Average SAT for SDSU was 1264
Average SAT for UCSD was 1410.

First and foremost, the UC’s will screen based on GPA, Test scores and HS course rigor.

UPDATE: I was rejected from UCSD, as was my twin brother, who got 1490 on the SAT and had a 4.4 GPA and was accepted at UCSB. His friend with similar grades and more extracurricular involvement was waitlist for UCSD but was accepted into UCLA. Not quite sure how they decided acceptance, reminds me of how UC Davis was this year.

@“17.dogs.sc28”: Each UC has their own criteria in what they want in an applicant which makes them unpredictable. So best of luck and you will do well wherever you end up.
