I do not understand is that a scholarship or finaid?

My S got a letter yesterday from "The Notre Dame Club Of ---" our city, and it talks about a scholarship that he needs to apply for, and they gave him only 48 hours to respond and if he was awarded the scholarship, he will be informed about it on April 10, and he has only 24 hours to decide. Anyone knows what is that? I thought there are no scholarships at Notre Dame and it seems tied to the financial aid package because they want to know our income and job details and they say that they already have a copy of the financial aid package we 've been awarded from Notre Dame. Anyone out there received a similar mailing and what was the amount awarded? our letter does not mention a specific amount of money.

There are individual ND alumni clubs in many cities. Many of which do offer scholarships to prospective students to offset cost of tuition to attend ND. Their criteria may be based on academic rather than financial need. Their award is independent of the school, in the sense that it is not money from the school that they are offering, but a scholarship the alumni club funds.

If anyone knows any more details feel free to chime in and assist here....

Thaks nemo for the quick response, do you know how much they usualy offer or does it vary by club?

how do you qualify for these alumni club scholarships?? Man, I am in need of one...

yeah i just applied for one yesterday but was kinda in the dark about the whole process...any more information would be great!!!

FightingIrish, we do not know how my son qualified for one, but I suspect that if you qualified for finaid then these scholarships will help you get more $$$ based on merit. So it seems that they are a combo financial need- merit. Our letter said that my son qualified for this merit scholarship, no info about the amount or whether it is a sure thing or a competition. May be melon922 can tell you more about the letter he received. Anyone out there who attends Notre Dame and gpt this scholrship, please explain.

you know i really don't know much about it...
basically it said they were alumni of chicago... that i had to do a 2 page resume and a 4 page essay...its due on saturday and i got the notice on monday....they will call on saturday to tell me if i get an interview or not...if i get an interview it will be next thursday and at the interview they will tell me if i get a scholarship or not...and thats about all the info i got. oh and they asked a few financial aid questions but not many at all...

My husband is a member of an alumni club which gives out scholarships. I don't know all the details but it is definitely something to try for. I believe you qualify based on academics, but financial aid will play a role on the amount. I heard of one boy several years ago who's family was in financial trouble and the alumni club gave him a $17,000 scholarship. They can be small or large depending on the club, how many applicants, and how much money is available. I wouldn't sweat the details - it's FREE money!
