I see people referring to the EC thread a lot, then I look at "What are my Chances," see someone with multiple of these "exceptional ECs" the admission person stated, and 4.0s, great rigor and SAT, but still considered "High Reach" for all of these insane schools?

What can possibly make someone a "low reach" for the sub 15% admission rate schools?

You believe those responses? Even if they are from me? Ha, ha.

Actually, there are some kids who i would be shocked if they did not get into one of the ivies other than HPYMSC. Young man who was val with 2300 SAT1s, perfect SAT2s, and all kinds of ECs and accolades got into all of his schools except those in that category. His parents were outraged that he did not get into HPY et al, I remember. I consider a match a school with a 40-70% acceptance rate so if there is a student “type” that tends to get into highly selective schools at that rate, I would consider those schools matches and low reaches for them. The problem is that with bad luck or something unforeseen or what we many not know in such students’ applications could turn that rate easily into no accepts, though really at my son’s schools, I do not know any kids with such stats who did not get into at least half of the non HPYetal schools they applied to with such stats, and most of them got into all of them when they are the calibre of the young man I just described.

Unless a person is from a family that donated a building or something, those super selective schools should be considered a reach for pretty much anyone.
